Topic: new hp fan with a question

I'm new to all of this Harry Potter stuff, i didn't start reading the books about two months before the movie came out...on video.  and it only took me two weeks to read all four books, cause after the first one i was hooked!
anyway, something always bugged me about the story.  I know it's something little and doesn't matter, but it bugs me just the same:
okay, if a person is muggle-born, how do they become a wizard?  do they just get a letter out of the blue from a school they've never heard of and send their kids off to learn magic?  I mean, how did Hogwarts know that little muggle Lily would be such a great witch?  how did they know to send her an invitation being a muggle?  does ANYONE understand what i'm talking about? It makes sense in my head
If you're a muggle and you've never heard of Hogwarts before, and you never knew there were witches and wizards walking around, like Lily Potter was, how do you get accepted to Hogwarts?  
Please someone let me know that this makes sense not only to me!

Okay, Prof. McGonnagall keeps track of every witch or wizards born, by what is in their blood or something.  The only thing I don't get is how a muggle born's parents will LET them go.  I know my parent's wouldn't.  Does this make any sense?

I think that the school just knows which people are magical.. well... because they are! Take Hermione for example. She was a muggle- born. She was a witch. I think that all humans started off as witches and wizards and they had squibs and muggle- borns, or as 'I will not rest until I bathe in Harry's blood and dine on his brain'  would put it, Mudbloods, 'cuz he's MEAN! Just kidding, he's okay when ya get ta know 'im. Yes, please stay! We did, and we get to talk and have fun! It's great for when you're not doing anything and you want to talk!

I think it's just a special gift some people are born with.  I think everyone would be capable of it to some extent but some are just born with that ability, and they show it through their lives, like harry suddenly appearing on the top of a building, or growing his hair back.  He didn't know he could do it, he just did because he was born with it.  Then some are just Duds, like the Dursleys.

no JK Rowling said herself that Professor McGonnagal has a special quill that keeps track of everyone with magical blood in them and each year, the quill writes a letter to each student and Professor McGonnagal mails them out.

Yup! That's how it's done. Professor McGonagall comes back every year to check who is written down that is turning 12 (or close to it). Then she send them their letters and all the good stuff! ^_^
