Yes, he is just a character to add to the story, which is always good.  It would get a little boring if it was all focused on Harry. . .

She should get someone who Harry is friends with but makes him think. But he likes the person * thinks girl* so he wants to date her *thinks someone nothing like Cho*

That's a good idea, but they already have so much going on, that could be hard to fit into the storyline, but maybe something like that did happen in the 6th book, to add a little something. . . . Maybe. . .
