Corner Money
« on: February 14, 2009, 12:13:06 AM »
Saying Rhyme had no money would have been and understatement.  He came to this school with no money and he finally got fed up with it.  Grabbing his best cloths and his hat, he decided to strike his cash in the way most artists did, by plying their craft on the street corners.

He found getting out to be amazingly easy, most of the teachers could tell his voice changing apart from their comrades so it was easy for him to hide around corners and morph his voice to make the teacher go away, he imagined that there would be some funny conversations around the staff table that night.

Making his way outside the school and down to Hogsmead he decided to set up his shop on the corner down the street form the Three Broomsticks.  As he walked he wondered what to sing, he could do those cheesy choir songs he heard the opening day or he could do some old Celtic songs his mother taught him.  He sighed, since he didn’t really want to degrade himself by conforming to their standards.

After five minutes of walking and thinking he decided that he would try a few of his songs, a few of those from other countries and languages and if those didn’t get him any money he would do the classic songs.

Rhyme cringed mentally when he reached the town limits and saw all the robes.  Even after a month of living at Hogwarts he could not move himself to wear those hideous things.  They were too heavy and looked too much like a personal tent.  He did look strange though in his ripped blue jeans, Fall Out Boy T-shirt and leather jacket with tons of jingling chains and things that could not be seen but also jingled.  To finish off his attire he had a metal rimmed fedora that could be deadly in the right hands.

When he hit the corner he pulled a piece of cardboard out of his sleeve with some difficulty with a black marker.  He wrote on the board in big letters “ONE MAN ORCHESTRA” and then gave his neck and fingers a crack, loosening up his body, he then pulled out what looked like a magic wand but was really an orchestra baton and set the music into motion and sang his first song.

Cody loved Hogsmead during the day. So many people thinking so many things, so many different things going on. It had once been a very sleepy little village, his mother told him one day, but now it was a bustling town during waking hours. And Cody just loved, loved, loved it. Besides, it was a great place to play hide and seek with his cousins, what with the tallest of them only reaching most people's hips. Those billowing cloaks made it easy to hide.
Not that Grandma really let them run far. But Cody had gotten annoyed quickly, leaving the safety of family to run amok in town. A small figure clad in dark jeans and a thick hooded sweatshirt, darting between and around people just to see how fast he could do it. His obsidian hair clung to his forehead with sweat from running, his normally pale cheeks a bright pink from breathing hard, and his ice blue eyes ultra bright. He skidded to a stop when he heard something out of the ordinary.
What was that?
Music?
Way cool.

Cody turned, his eyes zeroing in on the music maker. It wasn't hard, the music maker wore a sign stating that he was the music maker. Cody gave his head a shake, why was he thinking like that? Another shake, clearing the clouds and the sudden roundabout of words. From nearly across the street, Cody watched the music maker.
A boy clad in ripped jeans and some kind of band tee shirt and a leather jacket. Unusual hair and eyes. But the boy was singing. And Cody liked music. All music. It was one of those things his mom had instilled in him when he was little. Well, littler than he was now. Five was still little.

The boy finished his song, and Cody watched as some people threw coins at the boy's feet. Using music to make money? Now there's a thought. The boy must be pretty poor to have to do that. Cody wouldn't know about being poor. His mom had always had money, and then when his dad came back they'd had even more. Going to bed hungry was not something he would ever have to worry about.
The boy was skinny, but not so much that he looked to be starving. At least, Cody didn't think so. Didn't starving people's bellies usually distend? This boy was skinny, but not starving.
Maybe just tired of being poor. That was likely. Some people just hate being poor.

Cody's grandparents had been poor for a long time. Not cause his granddad didn't make good money. He just didn't make enough for his large family. Whatever. Dismiss the thoughts, don't want to think about family. This about the music. The boy. He'll sing more if you give him money.
The thought popped out at Cody and he nodded, digging in his pocket and crossing the street to throw a few sickles at the boy's feet. Look him in the eye.
"Hi. Are you going to sing some more?"

The whole process, start to finish only took Cody nanoseconds to think about. To act, to feel. To realize. He was smart, and quick, and bright. And now he smiled at Rhyme shyly. He'd never before seen the guy, but he liked the music.

Rhyme squatted down in front of the kid and talked to him as he picked up the money and put it in his hat which he placed on the ground.  When he looked at the boy he frowned slightly for a moment as he remembered his little brother who was around the kids age and his sisters.  His blinked a few times rapidly though as he smiled and pushed the memory aside for the time.

“Sure I will, do you got any requests?” he asked kindly.

He knew a lot of songs by heart from hearing them so much and any he didn’t know his MP3 player would let him hear and let him sing it half decently.  He pondered though if he should put some illusions in it but decided against it since these witch’s and wizards probably saw lots of illusions and cool little tricks and didn’t want to distract from the skills they probably didn’t see every day.

Stacey slowly podered out of the Three Broomsticks after finishing her glass of water. She had gotten out of school, having finished all of her necessary classes. She had decided to skip her last class which had been an instruction of the elements that she thought she was far too advanced to have to take.

She had hurridly changed from her school robes into light jeans and a black tee shirt with a mettalic design on the front. It had amused her to wear her Muggle clothes in Hogsmead; it never failed that at least one person would give her an odd lookor question her to make sure she was a witch. Her hair was pulled back into a tight tail at the back of her head and a gold ring was gleaming from her left hand.

As soon as she stepped out of the bar, she heard music. She turned her head slightly and saw, oh, what was his name? She knew him, who could forget someone with that hair or voice? Rhyme, that was his name, she decided with a satisfied smile. She took a few slow steps until she was a few feet from him, and she spotted Cody.

With a nod, she held out her hand and a gold coin flicked from between her fingers. Her eyes flashed a bright blue and her smile grew. She had loved music, and anyone else who liked music, too. She had been forced to learn to sing and play a variety of instruments, but she liked the piano best. In fact, she had a grand piano at her Muggle mother`s house.

She waited patiently to see if Cody would make a request, if not, she might have one.
"Get out of my way! I'm a free spirit!"
FOREVER WILL NEVER BE LONG ENOUGH.
"And now I understand a phrase I once thought odd;
I guess to love another person is to see the face of God."

When Rhyme knelt down and leaned forward, Cody took a step back. His face gave away nothing, but it was apparent he valued his personal space. He shook his head at Rhyme's question, he didn't know many names of songs. And those he did know he could sing himself, so no point in that.

"No request except for you to sing again."

He spoke very formally, much more so than his years seemed to allow. The way he stood, his body straight, yet at ease suggested some sort of soldier training. Then there was his ice blue eyes, which surveyed Rhyme as if sizing him up and finding his weak points. He was a strange creature, this small child.

"You sing exceptionally well, Signore."

((Bucky nearly always wears a leather jacket just so you know, I'm not trying to copy your character))

Bucky was working extremely hard in the kitchens that day, he probably wouldn't be trying so hard to make his meals exceptional if his boss wasn't such an a**hole to him and always looking for a reason to fire him and his old friend Alex who decided he needed a second job the ministry was paying him half his old weigh so he applied as a cook also and he was excepted.

This should have been Bucky's day of but his boss asked him to work that day and there was non compremising with this fella. Bucky and Alex's boss otherwise known as 'an uglier version  of Chucky the doll' walked in to the kitchens and shouted to Bucky an Alex "You're Fired!!" "What for?" asked Bucky "For poisoning a costumer" Chucky lied "But we don't both cook one meal together which means only one of us poisoned a customer" Bucky said smartly Chucky frowned "well your being rude to me so you are fired"  said Chucky "No I was just stating the obvious" Said Bucky proudly.
"Here's your pay for the week" Said Chucky handing Bucky half a bronze coin "half a knut" Exclaimed Bucky " worked an extra day this week" Bucky told Chucky stating the obvious again "exactly it earned you an extra half knut" Said Chucky, Bucky became very angry and punched Chucky in his ugly old face "I quit!!" Shouted Bucky "No wait you fired me" Said Bucky going to his locker and grabbing the only two items in it his microphone and leather jacket, Alex went to his locker and retrieved his saxophone and Blues Brothers shirt, Bucky put his jacket on and put the microphone In his pocket as Alex put his shirt on "Let's roll" Said Bucky in a cool voice.

It was sunny outside so Bucky and Alex put their sunglasses on in a cool fashion they walked down the road playing Peter Gunn's theme when Bucky said "What do you say about taking our band to the streets for extra moula" "Alright lets play near the three broomsticks" Said Alex. So the two headed for the corner on the road of the three broomsticks, when they arrived they where shocked, there was a boy  singing already theere and there must of been one hundred dollars in his hat, the boys jaws dropped, Alex went up to the boy as he finished his song what do you say we make this a small band and we play here every week' Alex asked "ya no any blues" Alex asked Rhymes.

The day had been a long one for Kali, she wasn’t used to this life in general and to be here, human of all things and attending a school that she’d once forsaken with her very being, she found to be punishment, however, hearing what she’d just heard was to her ears, amazing.  She seldom listened to others humming or even stopped to hear what they might be singing however, this boy, she found had a wonderful voice, a voice even an angel could appreciate.

She walked up and inclined her head toward the singer and with a smile, she tossed to him a gold coin, just one.

“Yes do, please, I would like to hear another, if you would be so kind as to grace us with one.”  She stated, her dialect still quite beyond what her years would suggest.

Kali wore today a simple enough outfit, tattered jeans with a tank under a ‘T’ that had words written across the chest that no one could distinguish as even meaning anything, but she found her apparel to be comfortable enough.  Her long raven locks had been pulled back into a sort of knot at the back of her head, though messy of sorts, it was as if meant to be as such.

She looked around at the others who had gathered and wondered if she might recognize any of them, but of course, she did not.  They were new faces, faces that thankfully enough, would not have recognized her.  A new start indeed was what she was after anyway, and so, perhaps she would gain that this year., she could only hope.

When the band showed up, she thought to herself, hey, this could get interesting, perhaps even more so than she had hoped.

“Of course, I know all the styles of blues from the Delta, up through into Chicago, back down into Texas and the newer versions of Rock Blues, though I think it is a bit lost in this crowd.  You know any Celtic Folk songs?”

As he said the last sentence his eyes fell purposely upon Kalista, feeling a strong old energy with her.  He felt old ancient magic within her, that of nature and the elements and a bit of the very earth itself, you didn’t live with a dying breed and not notice how to find others of the old ways.

“I got one that my mother loved to play.  Feel free to join in miss if you know the words, since I feel that you could give the song more justice then I could.”

He held out his hand and ribbons of yellow music flowed down out of his sleeves and formed into the shape of a violin.  He placed it to his neck and began to play very softly.  He could have easily shifted into the female vocal range but he didn’t want to weird out the people listening on seeing a person who is clearing male singing in the full female vocal range.

“I hear your voice on the wind
And I hear you call out my name”
His voice went up and down the normal male vocal range on the stressed ‘I’ in each line.  From his violin though came more then just the single song, it also produced the subtle base notes and other instruments the songs required.

“’Listen, my child,’ you say to me
‘I am the voice of your history
Be not afraid, come follow me
Answer my call, and I'll set you free‘“

After those lines were said he really began to play on the violin moving in beat with the song around the group that was standing there, but always keeping an eye on his hat for people trying to steal it.  He was always a bit paranoid since you never knew who would try and take your hard earned cash.

As Rhyme began to sing again, Cody's eyes closed, his way of focusing on the music alone. He stood perfectly still, listening to the music and letting his child's imagination run away with it. When Rhyme stopped singing, Cody opened his eyes, watching Rhyme dance around the group of onlookers.

The child smiled slightly, pulling out his last coin and tossing it into Rhymes hat. His mother had given him a pocketful of coins that morning, entrusting him to spend it wisely. He decided this was worthy of his last bit of money, and he had a feeling his mom would agree.

Kali noticed his orbs watching her so closely, almost as if he was inspecting her inner self, and not what she showed to the general public.  This one knew, what he knew wasn’t completely within her grasp of knowledge and she wasn’t about to pick at his mind so rudely to find out.  She was here to make friends, not to push humans away, no that would not do, less she wished to remain in this hideous human form forever, of course.

She smiled at him just before he started up again.  Sometime, during the mid of the song Kali tossed yet another gold coin into the hat almost without notice.  The music was hypnotic to the wild beast within as well the angelic creature who stood watching with clear onyx orbs shining in the sun.

This was Kali’s sixth year at Hogwarts, or well, she came to Hogwarts in her fifth, and this was her second, but sixth, either way one wished to look at it.  She had been around though, been around for a very long time.

The Celtic voice that rang out reminded this girl of times long ago, times before anyone here, or most anyone here could only speculate on in books and stories, or music.   The choice in songs this one brought forward returned her to the thought there was much more to their performer than was brought before the crowd.  She however still did not say a word and contented herself with simply listening.

Rhyme frowned mentally while keeping a smile on his face.  He hoped he could get some flash in her face that would alert him that his guess was right, that she was of an older time, instead he only saw that of remembering the past.  He did give her a nod of the head when she dropped another coin in with a clang.

“I am the voice in the wind and the pouring rain
I am the voice of your hunger and pain
I am the voice that always is calling you
I am the voice, I will remain”

The violin fell back to his previous level as his voice obtained new power during these lines.  He let a bit of his reality shifting powers out, not enough to actually change anything but enough to show that he had something more then just a pretty voice.  You could almost hear the wind and the rain in his voice and he grinned when he felt the wind blow, he didn’t ask it to but it was still cool.

“I am the voice in the fields when the summer's gone
The dance of the leaves when the autumn winds blow
Ne'er do I sleep thoughout all the cold winter long
I am the force that in springtime will grow”

On the word grow he let his arms go wide and he rose slowly from the ground as he played the next violin piece of the song.  He tried to stop this pointless showiness but sometimes he couldn’t help it, it was the artist in him.  While he focused on his playing he got a good idea on the way to end the song.  He wasn’t sure how much a normal wizard could conjure but he hoped it would amaze the crowd that was slowly gathering.

The wind came up as he sang this lovely song and now with that wind came the smells of sum, fall then winter and spring again.  She hadn’t meant to, it slipped, bringing with it the actual smells, wrapping their silent arms around the guests and swirling about their feet to carry those smells straight up to their noses and beyond.  Her eyes had closed and she now swayed with the sounds of the violin, her dark locks coming loose and now floating slightly with the breeze that carried it up and away from her shoulders as if the wind itself were dancing in her long raven locks.

She stood there like that for a moment before even realizing she had begun to become caught up in the music and then she opened her onyx orbs once more, allowing them to fall upon the musician and allowed a thankful smile in his direction curve up the sides of her lips, though at the same time, her eyes suddenly asked him “Why?”

She wanted to know why he had known, why he had known or how.  She still refused to be so rude as to pluck the information for herself, refused on the grounds that she was honestly not trying to make enemies, but friends.  Her past in this area had caused some horrid memories, some terrible things she had done to the students, but in the end, had taken to aiding them and was now, one of them, or at the very most, a visual aspect of what a student would be.

She opened her mouth as if to say something, but then closed it again as he continued to play, thinking perhaps that a song from an angel, would definitely not, be the course in which would hide her old self from her new.

((I'm confused))

Bucky and Alex watched Rhymes in total amazement. (Now just so you know when Alex & Bucky where in music mode Alex called Bucky Jake and Bucky called Alex Elwood) Alex was the first to speak "So whadda ya say Jake should we join in?" Alex asked Bucky in a cool fashion " Alrighty brother let's get back in the league" Bucky Said to Alex as he slided along the pathway in joy, Bucky jumped upon the little stage Rhymes conjured and started dancing (trying to keep the dancing in syncarnisasion and style to the song), Alex also moved himself onto the stage, he started playing his sax with joy.

With the two extra peapole playing they where getting three times the dough (money) which made them all happy, Bucky could hardly wait to sing again he was over joyed which made his dancing even cooler (making the dough triple again), cheers and fantastic music filled the area so it was all you could here if you where anywhere near the stage but this did not bother a soul, well at lest most souls.

As Rhymes finished singing Bucky stopped dancing and Alex stopped playing his sax Bucky confronted Rhymes and spoke to him "So what's your name?" Bucky asked Rhymes while putting glasses on his forehead. Bucky wore a broad smile.

Rhyme’s eyes sparkled as he saw her eyes finally register.  He didn’t have time to notice the smell of the wind so he had yet to know with total certainly what she was.  His eyes shown like stars and they wrote out to her.  All we be revealed soon  His eyes were like that of a grandfather, about to tell his grandchildren the answer to an old riddle they could not figure out.

“I am the voice of the past that will always be
Filled with my sorrow and blood in my fields
I am the voice of the future, bring me your peace
Bring me your peace, and my wounds, they will heal”

He slowly fell back to the ground after his violin part was finished.  He wasn’t around for any wars though any who have probably would have remembered them from the last few lines of the song.  All about the bloody fields, the damage down to the earth.

“I am the voice in the wind and the pouring rain
I am the voice of your hunger and pain
I am the voice that always is calling you
I am the voice”

“I am the voice of the past that will always be
I am the voice of your hunger and pain
I am the voice of the future
I am the voice, I am the voice
I am the voice, I am the voice”

The music rose as the end of the song approached.  The people would be able to feel the energy building, like a twisted rubber band about to be released or the calm before a storm, all the pent up energy from the song about to be released.

With the final “I am the voice” a large amount of deep red and orange leaves seemed to blow in from all over, from the large center streets that made up his corner, from the small allay ways, from the roofs of the buildings.  They swirled around Rhyme hiding him from all view until suddenly they blew up into the air and rained down upon the crowd.  But, if anyone would have looked at that moment, they would have noticed that the strange purple haired boy was gone, as was his hat full of copper, silver and gold coins.

A small red paper note though floated down right in front of Kalista.  It was in elegant scrawl like that of one who has written music on sheet paper for all his life.  It read simply:

Go to the door in the back of the Three Broomsticks, the one with a rest note in the top left hand corner.  Draw a 2/8th note above the doorknob and then turn it counterclockwise.

Rhyme

What he described was a door that he hoped the pub had.  It looked old enough to still have the old bard doors, little secret areas that the bards would use to set up or hide out in if the people got too drunk and rowdy.  He could tell she wanted to talk and this would be a nice private place to do it.

With the music gone, Cody was able to concentrate, his child's mind no longer having been distracted. He blinked, shaking his head as if coming out from a spell. He looked around him, to the women who Rhymed had seemed to be singing to. The black haired boy narrowed his eyes when he looked at her, he could feel something vastly different about this lady. And a lady she was, no matter how old she looked.
The five year old wasn't sure what the deal was with this one. But he felt something, and he had learned long ago to trust that side of himself. Something about her was calling to Cody, and he couldn't look away. Not even when he heard his grandmother's panicked voice somewhere in the fringes of the crowd, calling for him.

Cody watched the paper float to Kalista, unable to look away. Then his grandmother spotted him, pushing people out of her way and almost tackling him. She was yelling something, but Cody didn't listen, his eyes still trained on Kalista.

Suddenly he seemed to snap out of it, "Sì, nonna."
He glanced at his grandmother, who seemed to be settling down, then back to the mysterious lady.

"Finchè ci incontriamo ancora, la mia Signora." He murmured, allowing his grandmother to lead him away.
