CHAPTER ONE

~THE BIRTH OF IDENTITY~
[/i]

Ella opened her supernatural green eyes, just as a tear slid down her pale, ash-coloured skin, slipping into the crevice of the open wound in her cheek.  The glassy tear mixed with the warm scarlet blood in the wound and they fell together, embraced, down her perfectly curved cheekbone.  Her eyes filled up, cradling a new tear, just as the old bloodied one slipped into the corner of her soft lips.  Her face was like art itself, one of the reasons of why everyone had stopped to stare.  So many eyes just stared for what seemed like forever.  What ever is the matter now?  She thought, haven't they ever seen a girl before?  A few people pointed, others laughed.  Many of the girls looked as though they were about to cry.  Why doesn't everyone just go away?  She thought, why couldn't anybody leave me alone?

A boy that looked about the same age as her, stepped out from the crowd.  He advanced slowly, almost as if trying to approach a wild animal.  Ella took a step backwards and found herself back to back with the doors of the gigantic castle.  She dropped her one single bag of luggage and held her hands out infront if her body and face, looking scared and panicked.  The boy simply stopped walking and revealed a warm smile on his face.  He held out his hand and smiled, "Hi, my name is Scott, welcome to Durmstrang."

Ella just stared, her eyes searching his for some time, she didn't speak a single word but somebody in the crowd yelled out; "Whatever that thing is she sure doesn't talk!."  The carrier of the comment stepped out from the crowd.  A tall muscular boy, a lot older than her, he pushed Scott back into the crowd and approached Ella with a savage look on his face.  Ella began to shake a little and finally found her hushed but beautiful voice.  "Stop there, please...just stop" she pleaded, wishing everyone would just disappear and leave her alone.

Ella was a young veela, around the age of ten or eleven.  Someone or something had sent her to the magic school of Durmstrang.  Her memory had been disposed of from the moment she arrived.  All she knew was that her name was Ella and she was at Durmstrang, she was ten or eleven and somehow she had received a fairly deep wound in her cheek, just above her left eye.  With no knowledge of who she was, who or where her parents were, how she got to Durmstrang, or why everyone was so fascinated with her, she became quite an insecure and scared young girl.

"Aw, what's the matter pretty princess, don't you want to play?" he laughed dangerously as he took a swing at her, trying to land his arms around her waist.  His name was Victor Krum, he aim was to show the crowd he could capture and have any girl he pleased, little did he know he was playing his games with a little mistress of fire.

Before he could take another movement towards her she had him burnt to a crisp, he was the blackest thing in the corridor apart from Ella's eyes.  A few people screamed and ran off, while others just stared in awe and amazement.  Ella wanted no credit, for she was scared enough, she picked up her bag and made towards the crowd carefully.  A pathway was made almost immediately for nobody wanted to end up in the grasp of the flames sparking warningly at her fingertips.

She looked behind her at the crowd; her long silvery-white silk looking hair cuddled her shoulders as she turned.  All the male faces in the hall were smiling.  All except a handsome looking boy at the back of the crowd, standing in the shadows of the corridor.  He looked only a few years older than Ella was.  Ella then returned her gaze upon the crowd and noticed a small group of girls smirking and pointing at her feet.  She hesitantly looked down at her bare feet and felt as much as she saw an ice-cold puddle of water.

The people that could see this laughed hysterically, thinking she had 'wet herself'.  The truth was that the group of girls had played an awful prank on Ella.  She stared down at the puddle and saw her reflection for the first time in her life.  Her eyes narrowed and she swallowed heavily, realising that she was indeed a lot prettier than any of the girls around her, or any that she had ever seen for that matter.

Two tears then fell...one of blood, the other of pain.  They married each other as they fell, and became one as they hit the puddle.  Her reflection rippled and she stepped backwards quickly, realising only to soon that there was not just air behind her.

Ella slowly turned around, a few people gasped and immediately began to clean themselves up and resume a civilised posture.  Some even bowed slightly.  Ella had her eyes on a very expensive looking pair of leather shoes.  She swallowed even harder and slowly raised her head, first seeing the sleek silvery fur robes and cloak he wore, then as her eyes met his she took a deep breath and forced a tiny smile onto her delicate looking, tear and blood stricken face.

He was a tall, thin man, looking as though he had aged quite a few hundred years, though still with a stern look upon his face.  His short hair was pure white, along with a curly white goatee resting smugly at his chin.  His lips parted revealing what seemed to be a smile, although his teeth were very yellow, and his smile looked somewhat more like a sneer.

As you wish  ;)...

"Good evening, and welcome to Durmstrang, Madam" he said with an unusual tone in his voice.  Ella suspected it to be annoyance.  "You may address me as Professor Karkaroff.  I am the headmaster of Durmstrang and you will obey my every order from this moment on.  Are we clear?"  He raised one of his perfectly shaped eyebrows and extended his hand, another sneer upon his features.

Ella simply stood, staring into his eyes.  Her expression was unreadable and Karkaroff suddenly looked furious.  The students around her looked fearful of what Karkaroff would do to someone who didn't accept his open hand.  Again, all except the mysterious boy standing alone in the shadows.

Ella finally released her look on him and her eyes fell to look at the ground.  She bent her feet in towards each other and wrinkled her toes, feeling uncomfortable about the water on her feet.  Karkaroff shifted his gaze down to the floor to her feet, then tilted his head over hers and saw the puddle behind her.  He frowned and angrily shoved her out of the way, then ordered the schools caretaker, who had also been watching the scene, to clean it up immediately.

Ella's wet feet slipped over the tiled floor as Karkaroff shoved her, and she fell hard landing on her side painfully.  She let out a small yelp as she landed then she bowed her head in agony, her hair cascading around her face, hiding her tears from view.  Suddenly she felt herself being lifted gently to her feet.  She lifted her head and found herself face to face with the handsome boy from the shadows.

The corner of his mouth curved into a perfect half smile, and he let go of her softly.  His green eyes searched hers just as much as hers were searching him.  He lifted his hand and ran it through his short-cut brown hair.  She lifted her hand too, and wiped her tears away, a small smile flickering across her face.  The boy extended his muscular hand to her slowly, being careful and taking note of how she reacted before.

"Hey, you alright? The name's Saba-"
"EHEM!" Karkaroff cut the boy off before he could finish.  "That will be enough conversation for one day thank you Mr.Houlguin.  Ella has had enough attention I think, don't you quite agree Ella." He stated his last words more than asked, and with that he grabbed her by the arm and picked up her bag, then half pulled, half dragged her down the corridor towards where her room would be.  The boy crossed his arms and watched the two continue down the hall, fire sparking in his eyes.

CHAPTER TWO

~FORGETTING THE PAST~
[/i]

Professor Karkaroff slammed the door behind Ella as he shoved her into her room.  He locked it and threatened to throw away the key if she tried any foolish tricks on any other students in the school.  She simply ran to the other side of the room and stared at the door, petrified.  She heard him storm downstairs and begin to curse loudly while walking down the large corridors about what a nuisance 'this child' would be.

Ella waited until she could hear no more of him before she decided to move.  When she did move, only the tiniest steps were taken.  If someone had been watching her, they would have thought she was acting like some scared little mouse, getting ready to steal from a mousetrap.  She took one step after another and after about five tiny footsteps, made it to the side of a small bed.  She gently rested her luggage next to the bed, but didn't take anything out.  She then climbed carefully into bed, without changing into nightclothes, and not bothering to pull the covers over her, but despite all this, she soon fell fast asleep.

The next morning she awoke to freezing cold weather.  Her teeth were chattering madly and her body was shaking quite violently.  She checked her surroundings quickly, almost forgetting where she was, then hoped off her bed and closed the one single window that she had in her room.  Her room was small and dark, the kind that a slave girl would live in.  It was at one of the highest point of the rich castle, and yet was built out of wooden planks.  It had a small circular window in the wall at the end of a small, creaky bed.  There was nothing else in the room but the bed, Ella and her single bag of luggage.

After wrapping herself in a comfy black jumper and tucking her bare legs under her (she had been wearing a small skirt), she began to warm up.  Just to be sure she didn't catch a cold, she thought, she would hold a flame close to her heart, also it would make her feel safer in this new place.  After a few moments she had a dancing flame in her palms, she smiled and watched it happily, the first time she had smiled since seeing that boy.

The fire made her think of the boy, who was he? Where was he from? Why did she find him so interesting?  So many questions, she didn't dare ask though.  Ella didn't like it very much.  Why couldn't she go back to her past? That's when it happened.  A flashback of her past, she gasped as it happened before her eyes, a small wooden room, filled with blazing flames.  It took her some time to realise that it wasn't a flashback at all, it was actually happening!

Ella screamed as she realised what she had done, she reached over and snatched up her luggage, then ran to the door and began banging on it and screaming for help.  Minutes passed and she found no luck, so she ran back through the flames and landed hard against the window.  She stopped for a moment, looking down at her clothes and hands, untouched and unburned by the flames.  She smiled quickly and reached out daringly to the flames, knowing how stupid it must seem, but just as she suspected, nothing happened.  The fire licked at her skin playfully, almost beckoning her to join it, but she knew better, she turned to the window, thrust her fist through it's glass with a loud smash, cutting her hand.  Then she threw her luggage out and jumped out herself.

The fall seemed forever, although she seemed to feel like she was flying, to her relief, she realised she was.  Her arms had turned into pearly white wings and her feet had become talons.  She swooped down towards the ground absolutely bewildered with her transformation, unfortunately it wore off before she was safely back down on the ground, she couldn't hold transfiguration for very long seeing as she had never been taught it before in her life.

Luckily, because of the cold, it had been snowing.  She landed quite hard in the snow, fracturing her arm badly.  She winced in terrible pain and looked up, having heard footsteps not too far away.  Her hopes had been that the boy had come to help her again, but instead she came face to face yet again with the leather shoes of Professor Karkaroff.

CHAPTER THREE

~FLIGHT OF THE FIRE WHITE PHOENIX~

Ella slowly sat herself up, leaning against her good arm.  A crowd had already gathered and this was the second time she had been confronted by the many accusing yet curious eyes of the students, and also the second time Karkaroff had been almost steaming from his ears in anger.

Ella opened her mouth to speak but Karkaroff simply waved a hand to silence her, she took no notice.  "Professor, I'm ever so sorry, but the room was cursed I tell you!  One moment I was minding my own business, the next thing I knew, the whole room was on fire!" she tried desperately to explain.  The other students burst into fits of laughter at the stupidity of the girl and some of the students began to act dazed like they were in a trance, then began to panic, imitating her.

For the first time, she turned to them with angry dagger tipped eyes, daring them to mimic another movement.  She then turned back to Karkaroff's tomato red face.  "Please Sir, you must understand I didn't mean for anything to go wrong!" she pleaded, fearing what he might decide to do with her.  "That's enough Miss...erm...Miss...err...That's enough madam!" and with that he motioned for her to follow him, leaving her to carry her own luggage with her one good arm, he lead her to the Hospital Wing of the school.

The Doctor seemed nice enough; he gave her a purple coloured liquid to drink and the pain in her arm subsided soon after.  He cleaned up the bloodied arm and then told her that her arm should be better by the next morning, but she shall have to stay overnight.  The professor left almost immediately after arriving at the wing, and Ella never saw him for the rest of that day and the coming night.

She made herself comfortable in one of the hospital beds and lay down under the blankets, staring at the ceiling and watching the flames flicker on the candles held by the chandelier above her.  She couldn't help but wonder, how the window in her room had suddenly been locked, after the fire started.  It had caused her to have to break the glass and jump.  When she had closed it earlier due to the cold, she hadn't locked it.

Ella also couldn't help wondering how she had turned into that white phoenix, and flown almost to safety.  She didn't remember ever being taught transfiguration, yet she seemed to naturally have a knack for it.  Her next thought was the wonder of why Karkaroff hadn't used her last name when he was addressing her.  Instead he always insisted on using 'Madam', yet Ella noticed that he never did this to any of the other female students.  Was it because he didn't actually know her real last name?  Or was it because he was too afraid to use it?

CHAPTER FOUR

~ ¿? FRIEND OR FOE ?¿ ~

"I ought to crush your pretty face right now you little b..." Victor trailed off as he saw the Doctor walk past.  He had been watching her ever since she had entered the Hospital Wing and only then did she realise he was lying in a bed to the left of her.  She jumped and turned to face him, huddling further under the blankets until only her eyes were visible.  The Doctor bid them all a good night and retreated to his office, which was situated a little ways down the hall.  He locked the door and turned out all the lights before he left, leaving them with just the flickering flames of the candles in the chandeliers above them.

Victor and Ella were the only two students in the single ward, and Victor knew this all too well.  He sat up almost immediately after the Doctor left and the most ruthless smile Ella thought she had ever seen was seated on his face smugly.

"Well, well, well," he said, holding the last letter in each word, until a shiver raced down Ella's spine.  She sat up and lowered the blankets just a little so he could see her lips.  She then whispered, she didn't know why she was whispering, but it seemed pointless to raise her voice seeing as they were the only two there.  "What are you going to do?" she said innocently, not sure if she wanted to hear the answer.  Victor laughed a booming sort of laugh, which made Ella want to hide under the blankets again.

"Oh nothing really...I just want to play a little game...It's called 'The kissing game'..." he paused to see her reaction.  She just fed him her unreadable look, so he decided to continue.  "The idea of the game, is to see how long you can kiss me for..." as he spoke he lifted himself from his bed, and slowly made his way over to hers, limping slightly from what Ella could see was a dark burn still visible on his leg.  He reached the side of her bed and smiled his awful smile at her again, which made her shudder.

Ella had a sudden burst of courage, she threw down the blankets sharply with her good arm, making him step back, then she narrowed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting it out in a wisp of black smoke.  "You don't want your whole body to end up like your leg again do you?" she pointed out smoothly.  He shrugged his sudden fear off and hesitated.  She spoke again, this time in a more firm voice, not like the little girl she was.  "If you take one more step towards me, I will fry you like a burnt crisp." She stated with satisfaction, realising his sudden hesitation.

Ella didn't realise that victor was good with performing different facial effects.  He offered a look that read fear, hesitation, regret and decisions, but his true ambition was to get what he wanted.  He took her by surprise and grabbed the back of her head, pulling at her hair and leaning forward to kiss her.  She tried to pull away and scream but his hand was over her face, stopping her eye contact with him, due to no eye contact, she couldn't use magic on him.  Ella did everything with her eyes and didn't need a wand, but Victor had figured this out already.  He was like a sly fox with a cunning strategy to get what ever he wanted, and it was working.

He leaned in to kiss her but at the last moment was thrown back against his own bed by a force Ella had not created.  She figured quite quickly that someone else must be in the room.  She sat back against the head of her bed and looked around for the source, her now glowing eyes, fell upon a girl around her age, with her wand out and her chocolate coloured eyes focused on Victor.  Victor was lying unconscious back on his own bed, and for this Ella was ever so thankful.  She looked back at the girl and the girl looked back at her, they both smiled.

"Hey, my name's Jessika, Jessika Papion, what's yours?" the chocolate eyed girl asked.  Ella didn't relax a muscle in her body but answered anyway.  "Ella" she whispered.  "Ella? Ella what?..." Jessika asked, rather expectedly.  Ella felt her heart drop to that familiar low place, somewhere close to her stomach.  "I...I...I don't know..." she said as her eyes fell to look down at her bed.  "You don't know what your last name is?...Ok..." Jessika thought this was most confusing but she saw Ella's features sadden and she decided to leave it alone.

"So, you're the new girl huh?" she said quite cheerfully, changing the subject, little did she know, Ella didn't like this subject either.  "Yeah...I'm the new girl..." Ella replied.  She spoke as though she was just learning to speak, yet somehow still perfected every word with her unusually beautiful voice.  Jessika smiled at this and jumped up on the bed beside Ella, putting her wand away in her dressing gown.

Ella stared at the wand and watched her put it away with interest.  "What you've never seen one of these before?...Well that's understandable because you see mine is quite rare, almost one of a kind, only a few of the other girls in my classes have this type of wand, oh...and this boy I met at Diagon Alley, oh...and my sister, and this other boy that has been my friend for ages, and..." Jessika talked and talked for what seemed like forever, to anyone else they would have fallen asleep during it, but Ella found it most interesting.  She hung onto every word, every point, and eventually had to cut in and interrupt Jessika in mid-sentence, which wasn't something that Ella did often.

"I...I've never held a w-wand..." Ella said quietly, while looking at the long stick like figure Jessika had just stopped waving around.  "You what?! Oh dear, you must have fallen pretty hard on your head when you fell from that window...Actually, come to think of it, that was amazing, the way you turned into that incredible Phoenix! Then flew down to the snow, and almost made it, you know in Latin Papion means Butterfly, 'oh Ella!' do you think one day I will turn into a butterfly and fly away from a fire just like the way you..." she began blabbing on again and Ella had to interrupt for the second time, an unfamiliar feeling forming in her heart, a giggle.

"No, really, I've never held a wand..." Ella interrupted smiling.
