Chapter one: Reunion
Following World War Three, the humans, and animals began to change. Not all at once but slowly. Children were born with unexplained powers and the animals seemed to be mutating as well. Horses would give birth to foals with one horn which seemed also to have certain powers about them and, other, new creatures began to appear, some frightening some magical.
Slowly, over the years, the magical beings began taking over. The time for machinery and weapons of mass destruction was over. The time of magic had come. People realized now, that the fairy tales they read as children, about magical creatures, such as, wizards, dragons, sorcerers, and such were not just mere fantasy but had been actual predictions.
Two hundred years after the war, the two most prominent sorcerers had a falling out. One, Lord Vandimire thought the humans should be enslaved. The other, Lord Darion, thought the opposite, hence, a war broke out between the two armies. Lord Vandimires' armies had taken over the entire Western Hemisphere and now, were being held at bay.
Lord Vandimire had a daughter. She had been sent in to exile after deifying him eight years ago. He had sent his General and his son to retrieve her now, Lord Vandimire knew, she was the key to winning this battle.
Zorin sat in the back of the carriage with his father. He wasn't happy about being taken away from his home in the castle to be sent to pick up Lord Vandimires' daughter. Zorin had just turned eighteen years and was hoping to do anything other than spend his birthday riding in the back of a carriage, just to pick up a girl who, was probably both spoiled, and ugly.
" Tell me again why, I have to come along on this trip with you, father." He said in a rather bored tone.
"Because, Lord Vandimire wants you to become his daughters' personal guardian, as I am his. You shouldn't question his orders. You need to learn your place. The time for you to be a child is over, Zorin. Now, no more questions." His father replied, some what annoyed that his son had become so spoiled that he would dare to question the orders of the Dark Lord.
Zorin only knew three things, about this girl they were ordered to bring back. One was of course, the fact that she was the daughter of Lord Vandimire, the leader of the Dark alliance. The second being she was a very powerful sorceress and, the third and the reason for her exile to this Island they were headed for, was that at 10 years of age, Lord Vandimire had killed her twin brother for standing against him and, she brought him back to life, thus, rendering him an immortal.
"We'll be there in a few minutes, Zorin."
"Oh, yea," he paused. "Father, you've met this girl on several occasions. What do you think of her?"
"What I think of her is that you could certainly learn about, manners from her."
"Thanks a lot, what I mean is, is she nice or some spoiled little rich pregnant dog?" Zorin replied. Jason regarded his son for a moment then said,
"I guess you'll just have to wait and see." He knew what his son was getting at. Zorin really wanted to know if he was going to spend, his whole life, defending an ugly hag. Jason smiled, Boy, wont you be surprised. He thought to himself, continuing to smile.
They passed over a long bridge, and then had to wait until the gate to the Island was opened. When they finally got through, they rode for another mile until they came to a very larger manor, located off to the right. They turned in the drive and, got out in front of the entrance. Before they reached the door, it flew open and what Zorin thought to be the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen, came walking out. She was about his own age; long dark brown hair, slim, muscular build and her eyes were the most brilliant green. He watched as she walked up to his father, giving him a great hug.
"Sir Jason, it's been entirely too long since your last visit." She said, still hugging him. Then, letting him go she said "What brings you here to my island, this time?" Jason smiled at her.
"We can discuss that shortly. I want you to meet my son," he paused and motioned towards Zorin.
"Lady Kiara, this is my son, Zorin." Kiara extended her hand to him. Zorin took it into his own and bent to kiss it. Then, looking up into her eyes, he straightened, still holding her hand.
"A pleasure to meet you." He said, smiling. He couldn't pull away from her gaze. He was utterly lost in those eyes. Finally, after a few minutes, she asked,
"May I have my hand back, please?" As soon as he released her hand, she turned quickly away.
"So, let's go inside. We can sit and you, Sir Jason, can tell me what brings you here." With that said, she walked back inside. Zorin and his father followed her. As Zorin turned to close the door, he found it was already doing such. He looked questionably at his father who, nodded.
They followed Kiara into the drawing room and, each took a seat.
"Well, you're here for my father, no doubt. What does the old bastard want this time?" Kiara got right to the point. She hated her father, and with good reason too. He not only killed her brother but also their mother. Kiara was only a baby when he killed her mother. After Kiara and her brother, Zed, was his name, were born, their mother tried to hide them. She didn't want her children to end up involved with The Dark Alliance in any way. Zed was given to a family in Oregon but, as she was headed to California, to give Kiara to a human family there, Vandimire caught up with her and, killed her. It wasn't for another 10 years that, Vandimire finally found and, killed his son. He had done it, right in front of Kiara. Not knowing she shouldn't be able to do so, Kiara had brought her brother back to life, rendering him an immortal. Vandimire, of course, was furious. He sent Kiara to this Island then, and she had remained here ever since. Vandimire saw to it, of course, that she learned to advance her sorcery. In addition, he sent Sir Jason there, often to train her to use assorted weapons and to continue her martial arts training. In short, Vandimire turned his daughter into the perfect weapon and, she hated him for that too.
"Yes Kiara, Vandimire has sent us here. He thinks it's time for you to take your place at his side. He wants you also, to except, my son, Zorin, as you personal guard, not that you need one, of course, like I do for your father, Zorin will do for you, he will both protect you and carry out your orders."
"Humph, so he wants me to join him, does he? I suppose he thinks I'll jump for joy at the prospect of his, almighty forgiveness." She laughed sarcastically and shook her head. "I guess, he's giving me no choice. He'd probably kill my godparents, if I refused. When do we leave?"
"We leave in two days. You're excepting his proposal, then?"
"As if I ever had a choice." Kiara got up and walked out of the room. Zorin watched her go; she turned and caught his eye, briefly, then was gone.
"Boy, she really hates her father, doesn't she?" Zorin commented.
"Yes, she does, Zorin. She has her reasons though." Jason went on to explain what Lord Vandimire had done to her mother and her brother and of the painful punishments he often used on her.
"He used to come here, quite often. When he did, he meant to kill her. Each time he would simply say that he would kill her the next time. He never left however, until he had tortured her to the point of death. Sometimes it was quick, other times, he would keep it up for two or three days. Finally, when she was about sixteen, her just stopped coming altogether." Jason regarded his son for a moment. Zorin had a look of horror on his face.
"Don't misunderstand me. Kiara is totally loyal to her father. If she weren't, she would have fought back when he tortured her but she never did. I guess, that is why, he never killed her. You should go find her now. She would probably love some company." Zorin got up and left the room. He didn't say anything to his father or ask any more questions, he just left.
BUMP!
Zorin found Kiara, standing out on a balcony, watching the horses in the field below. She heard him approach, "Do you ride?" She asked. "What?"
"Do you ride horses?" She smiled at him.
Returning that smile, he told her, "Ya, I've ridden before."
"Good, lets go for a ride. I need to get out of this house."
They went down to the stables. Kiara had a couple slaves get the horses ready. One of them, bumped into Kiara, nearly knocking her over.
"Sorry Lady Kiara." He said quickly.
"It's ok, Timothy. Just, try to watch were your going next time, ok." Kiara told him, in a kind manner. "Yes mamma, I will." He went on about his work.
"You treat your humans as though they were equals." Zorin said with surprise.
"Why not? It's not their fault they weren't born as us." Kiara replied.
"But, their just animals." Zorin replied.
"No they are not! They are humans; just the same as you or I, they just aren't Mages or Sorcerers. That's the only difference." Kiara retorted, growing angry at his views on the non-magic humans.
"Well, don't you punish them like you would a dog, when they disobey?" He replied, trying to make a point.
"Well, doesn't your father punish you when you disobey him? What does that make you?" She answered, with a look of triumph on her beautiful face. Zorin shook his head in defeat.
"Ok, you win, I see your point." He replied smiling.
"Good, then let's ride." They mounted their horses and Kiara dug her heals into the side of hers and was off. Zorin went after her. She kept the pace up for a mile or so before finally letting her horse walk. Zorin road up next to her. He still couldn't believe how beautiful she was, he caught himself staring. Kiara dismounted when they reached a clearing in the woods. Zorin followed suit.
"Lets go sit over there and talk." She pointed out a spot under the trees.
"I don't know why my father thinks he needs me, he already controls the whole Western Hemisphere and Australia. You'd think, that'd be enough for one person." Kiara stated in a defeated tone.
"My father informed me that the light forces are beginning to push back at him. They have a new leader and he seems to have empowered the people. They call him Lord Zed." Kiara gasped,
"What's wrong?" Zorin looked worriedly at her.
"You said his name was Lord Zed?" She asked
"Yes, Why? Does that mean something to you?"
Kiara didn't say anything for a moment then, she looked up at Zorin. "Zed is my brothers name. You don't think my father actually expects me to defeat him, do you." Zorin didn't know what to say but he figured that, yes that was most likely, exactly what her father had in mind. They talked for a while longer then, when it began to get dark, thought it best to get back before the demons came out.
They arrived back, just in time for dinner. Kiara's godmother made them go clean up and change before she let them eat. After dinner, Jason retired to the drawing room with Kiara's godparents. Kiara showed Zorin to his room. She didn't leave right away; she went out to the balcony and looked over the woods. Zorin joined her. He, however, wasn't looking at the woods.
"Stop looking at me like that, it makes me nervous." She said, turning to face him. Zorin, instead of listening, stepped closer. She looked at him,
"You shouldn't, we shouldn't --- " he kissed her. She tried, at first, to back away but he wouldn't let her. She gave in and allowed it. Finally, he let her go.
"Sorry for that, Kiara." He said with a smile.
She smiled back, "That's ok, it was --- nice. By the way, Happy Birthday." Then she turned and hurriedly left his room.
The day had come for them to leave, after Kiara had said her goodbye's to her godparents, the three of them got into the carriage and began their six hour ride back to Lord Vandimire's castle and Kiara's new home.
"How did you know it was my Birth Day?" Zorin asked Kiara. She smiled at him.
"Do you want the honest truth, or a convenient lie?" she asked him directly.
"Well, the honest truth would be nice." He smiled back.
"Ok then, let me try and explain." She paused for a moment and thought. "I sometimes, can feel, what's on a person's mind. It's not like actually reading their thoughts; it's more like, felling what they are feeling. It doesn't always work. It only happens when, and not always, I touch another person. I felt in you when you kissed me last night."
Jason snapped his head up when he heard this. He looked angrily at his son.
"Now, don't get mad at him Sir. Jason. The whole thing was kinda nice. Besides, if he's going to be my persona; guard, it does help if he likes me, doesn't it?" She teased. Jason and Kiara laughed. Zorin did not.
"Oh come on Zorin, if you can't laugh at your self, then what good is laughter, at all." Kiara said to him. After a while, Zorin smiled at her, he had finally realized that Kiara had made light of what she let slip, in order to keep him from trouble. Kiara winked at him.
The rest of the trip went mostly quiet. They talked of anything and everything except, Lord Vandimire. Kiara made it abundantly clear that she didn't want to talk of her father until absolutely necessary. The men decided it best not to pry.
As they approached the castle, Kiara could feel his presence. She tensed up. Looking around, she could see why, Zorin had been so surprised at the way she treated her humans. The ones who lived here, if, you called it living, were terribly underdressed. Some even had collars around their necks or were chained to posts while their masters went into shops. Kiara watched out the window at them. She hoped she could help them, at least, a little.
They stopped at the castle gate. The driver said something to the gate-guard and he let them pass without trouble. The three of them got out at the entrance to the castle. Some palace slaves, who gave them instructions as to were to go and change for their meeting with Lord Vandimire, greeted them. Kiara was brought to a room full of nothing more than woman slaves. Three of them, lead her to the bath and, after some coaxing, they got her undressed and in. After arguing that she could wash herself and, loosing, they finally got her cleaned to their satisfaction. She was rushed to another room were, lying on a table was a black, silk gown. Kiara sighed. So, daddy wants his little girl to play dress-up for him. She thought to herself. The gown was full length, with both a high collar and long sleeves. After putting it on, to the horror of her attendants, she modified it more to her liking. Kiara smiled. "This is much better, don't you think?" She asked one of the girls. The girl smiled nervously but didn't answer, she didn't have to, Kiara knew she agreed.
Kiara was then lead, by some other sorcerers; to the main hall were her father, Zorin and Sir. Jason awaited her arrival. When she entered the hall, Zorin nearly dropped at the sight of her. The dress she wore now was the complete opposite of the one her father had given her. She had modified it to be v-necked and open at the back, not to mention fitting her like a glove. Her hair was up and she wore a silver chain, encrusted with black diamonds around her head like a crown.
All who had entered with her immediately bowed down, Kiara remained standing.
"I see you disapprove of the style I selected." Lord Vandimire said, looking rather amused. "Come closer child, there is no reason for you to stand in a muddle such as that." He was referring to those who had prostrated them self on the floor around her. Kiara stepped over a few bodies and walked forward, standing next to Zorin.
"You know why you're here, I trust. Therefore, I won't waste time. What is your answer?" Vandimire got straight to the point. Kiara regarded him for a moment before she replied.
"Is it true that my brother has taken command of the Light? Is this why you have summoned me?"
Lord Vandimire frowned, "She answers a question with a question," he paused. "Normally, I'd have punished a person for such insolence but, since you are unaccustomed to the way things work, around here, I'll give you another chance. What is your answer?" Lord Vandimire looked at her and waited.
"And, I asked, is it true, my brother is in control of the Light and, as to rather that is the reason for you tearing me away from my home or not." Kiara said in an emotionless tone.
Lord Vandimire stared angrily at his daughter. "You have obviously forgotten the lessons that I taught you, Kiara." He said with a growl. As he said this, Kiara stumbled forward into Zorin whom caught her. Kiara snapped her head up and stared into the eyes of her father, her look was both dark and hateful.
"I will not, let you punish me in front of all these, people. If you want me to stand with you, I will however, and understand me clearly on this, I will not, be some one for you to kick around, You will treat me as your equal not as your slave." Kiara's eyes were glowing, as were her fathers.
"You also, will not punish me or degrade me in any way in front of this riff raff, or, I will simply, walk away." Kiara had straightened back up. Lord Vandimire began to laugh.
"You have become quite strong, my dear but, don't underestimate my power. I shall, however, honor your wishes. I will not punish you, in front of others. Now, will you answer my question? I will answer yours, when you do." They stood there staring at each other for a moment before Kiara answered.
"Yes, father, I will help you, as long as you do not, expect me to destroy Zed."
Lord Vandimire smiled. "Ok, good then, the answer to you questions is, yes, on both accounts. As to what happens to your brother, I shall leave that in your hands. You may go now." Vandimire motioned to Zorin to take her away. Together, he and Kiara left the hall.
BUMPO!
"So, my friend, do you think your son can accomplish his task, if he is called upon to do so?" Vandimire asked of Jason.
"I do, my Lord. If Kiara turns on you, my son will do as he has been trained. He will kill her upon your command." Sir. Jason relied.
"She seems to have taken a liking to him. My son will play on this and, if the time comes, she won't even suspect him. It's all too easy." The two of them laughed, they knew, Kiara would turn on him at some point and, they had devised the perfect way to dispose of her when, that occasion arose.
(end chapter 1)
Chapter two: The slaves
"Well, I guess the first thing I should do is, show you to our room." Zorin said as they walked down the corridor.
"Our, room, what do you mean, our room?" Kiara asked, raising her brow.
"Well, since I have been sworn to protect you, I will be living in the same quarters as you, your majesty." Zorin replied firmly.
"Just what I always wanted, a roomie." Kiara replied, sarcastically. "I don't suppose there's any way to get out of it." She asked hopefully.
"No, way. I have my orders and like it, or not, your stuck with me."
Kiara sighed and followed Zorin to their rooms. When they got there, Kiara noticed that her things had already been brought up. Looking around, she noted, also, that her wonderful father had sent her some slaves of her own. After noting that they were all, terribly, underdressed, she had one of them go fetch the tailor.
"I can't believe, they make these poor people run around here like this. It's the middle of winter for crying out loud!" Kiara said angrily to Zorin.
"I suppose, you sent for the tailor to cloth them, not you?" Zorin asked, amused at the thought of Kiara having the best-dressed slaves in the palace.
"Well yes, of course I did. Do you see a problem with it?" Kiara asked dangerously.
"Uh, no, I don't." Zorin replied quickly, noting her dangerous tone.
"Good, then you can go do, whatever it is, that you do and leave me to my work." Kiara shot at him, not really meaning to take it out on him but doing it anyway. Zorin, feeling a little put off, went and sat on the couch and picked up a book to read. Just at that moment, the slave Kiara had sent away came back with the palace tailor.
"What can I do for your highness?" He asked Kiara.
"It's not what you can do for me, it's what can you do for them." She motioned to the line of slaves by the window. "I want them fully clothed by the end of the day." She ordered.
"But, my Lady, you can't possibly ---" Kiara cut him off, "Are you questioning my direct order? For your sake, I most certainly, hope not." She said in a dangerous tone.
"No, you majesty, I, I'll have them dressed as you wish." The tailor replied, a bit sullenly.
Zorin smiled as he thought, She's going to have this place turned upside down in no time. Kiara caught his smile, she glared at him, and he quickly turned away. Kiara went on to describe what she wanted in, uniforms, for her slaves. When she was finished, she left the room to change out of the dress and into something more comfortable. She came out and sat across from Zorin and, stared at him. After a bit, he put down his book.
"Yes, your Majesty? Did you want something?" He asked, feeling more than a little nervous about the way she was looking at him. Kiara didn't answer; she only smiled a devilish smile at him. Then, she picked up her own book and started reading.
At the end of the day, as commanded, the tailor and his assistant brought back ten uniforms for Kiara's slaves. She thanked him politely and handed them out to every one.
"Girls you may use my room to change and the men may use Zorin's." Zorin opened his mouth to protest but quickly closed it again deciding it best not to argue with her.
"Then, when you have finished, I think Zorin and I will dine in here tonight so, you can go fetch us some dinner."
Zorin stared at her as if she were nuts. "Your actually going to have them leave the room dressed like that?" He spoke before thinking.
"Well, yes I am. If the rest of the palace doesn't like it, they can come talk to me. That includes my father!" She shot back angrily.
"Ok, ok, I was just asking. Geesh! You sure are grumpy tonight." Zorin replied, he was a little hurt at being yelled at.
"I'm sorry Zorin. I guess I'm taking this out on you, aren't I? It's just that, I can't stand to see these poor humans treated worse than dogs and my father; he's such an ass! I only wish he'd --- well never mind. I'm sorry, ok?" She gave Zorin a sweet look that melted away any anger he may have had left.
After a bit, Kiara's slaves returned with dinner, they were followed by non other than Lord Vandimire. Kiara told her slaves to put the dinner on the table and to leave, immediately. She knew there was going to be an argument and didn't want any of them to get hurt.
"What's this, Kiara? Not only do you choose not to join me for dinner but also I find that you've clothed all your slaves! The palace Tailor has enough work to do with out having to cloth humans as well!" Lord Vandimire yelled.
Kiara looked at him angrily. "Are you quite finished? First of all, I chose not to eat dinner with the likes of you because, quite frankly, the very site of you makes my stomach turn."
Zorin cringed at her words, spoken so freely to her father.
"Second, those are MY humans to do with as I see fit. If your precious tailor can't get some, fat, noblewoman's dress done soon enough for her because I want my humans clothed then, that's too d**ned bad! I will not sit around here with a bunch of half naked people running about. I will NOT treat MY humans like dogs and if you have a problem with it, that is just too bad!" Kiara was looking directly into her father's eye and knew it was coming, she braced herself. As he spoke, Vandimire unleashed his anger upon her, slowly. Kiara fell to the floor in a ball as he tortured her.
"I told you, Kiara, a long time ago that, I would not put up with an insolent child." Vandimire started.
Zorin couldn't watch, he turned away as she let out an anguished scream. He couldn't understand why Kiara, who he knew was more than capable of stopping him, would stand for this.
"You can keep your slaves clothed, that's fine but, from now on , you WILL, at least, join the rest of us for dinner." He spoke slowly and, when he finished, he left the room with his cape flowing behind him.
Kiara had passed out, Zorin went to her, lifted her gently off the floor, brought her to her room, and laid her on the bed. After doing this, he went to the slaves' quarters and told one of them to fetch a bowl of cold water and a cloth then to bring it to him in Kiara's room. When the girl came back with them, she asked timidly, "Will the Lady be alright?"
Zorin, at first looked angrily at her for speaking then, softened his gaze and said, "Yes, she'll be ok. I'm sure she wouldn't want you to worry." The girl bowed as she left the room. "Oh, Kiara, now you've got me, being nice to them too." He smiled.
Zorin stayed at her side all night. The only time he left was to grab a bite to eat and to give the rest of the food to the humans. Can't let it go to waste, can I? Was the excuse he made for his kind gesture to the human slaves. He walked out of their quarters shaking his head.
When Zorin woke up the next morning, Kiara had already left the room. He walked to the door and heard voices on the other side. He paused to listen. "Ok so let me get this straight, your name is Shella, you are Kami and you ---"
She's learning all there names. Zorin shook his head as he smiled and thought about how his life had been torn apart the moment he was assigned to her. He waited a few more minutes then came out.
Kiara turned and smiled at Zorin as he walked out. "You may all be excused now." She said to her humans, still holding Zorin in her gaze.
"You stayed with me last night. Thank you." Kiara said with a smile. Zorin couldn't look away, it was almost as if she was holding him there.
"You needed attention." Zorin replied.
"Yes, but you could have sent for some one else to take care of me but, you didn't." Kiara walked over, still holding his gaze; she kissed him briefly on the lips then, turned away, letting him go.
"Are you hungry?" She asked softly. "We've only got a few hours until we begin training with the soldiers we're to take with us into battle."
"Ya, I guess I am, a little hungry." Ha replied, confused as to her intentions. Zorin wanted nothing more than to hold her. He could still feel her lips on his, he wanted more. Zorin walked up behind her, putting his arms around her waist and began kissing her neck. Kiara closed her eyes and accepted this advance. He then turned her around and began kissing her, passionately, running one hand through her soft hair and using the other to hold her to him. Suddenly he let her go, shocked at what had just happened. Then, trembling, he left the room. Kiara didn't know what to make of it. She knew he wanted her, why was he resisting so hard. What was stopping him? She thought for a moment then came to the conclusion that he was simply trying to keep their relationship as professional as possible. She sighed then ate her breakfast. When she was done, she changed into her field cloths for a day of training.
Zorin sat in his room, horrified at what was happening. All his life he had been trained for one purpose and one purpose only. To kill, Lord Vandimire's daughter should she ever turn on him. Now, he found himself falling in love with her. How could he ever hurt Kiara? d**n it! He whispered to himself, as he too, got ready for a day of training.
After he had eaten something, Zorin and Kiara headed out to the training field to meet their soldiers. "There are so many of them." Kiara whispered to Zorin who, smiled and said, "Yes, but we only need train twenty as our personal guard. They in turn will pass on some of what they learn to the rest." He explained. Together, Kiara and Zorin handpicked twenty men and women from the group of two hundred presented to them. Their group consisted of Elvin archers, Sorcerers, and some of the better fighters of the group. The fighters were the people with minimal magical power who in order to survive in this new world, had found a position in the armies to keep from enslavement. Kiara only allowed one healer for their group.
"We don't need more than one close to us. The rest need to be placed in the field." She had argued. She wanted fighters only, insisting that they, herself and Zorin, knew enough of healing to get by, when, so many soldiers had such limited magic use. She finally gave in and let Zorin have the one.
"What if we get separated and you need medical attention." Was his argument. He absolutely would not back down. Therefore, she gave in and let him pick the one healer.
They spent the next seven hours on the field with their soldiers, when finally Kiara, to everyone's pleasure, reported that they had done enough for the day. They all left the field exhausted, but each one had learned a new spell or new fighting technique for swordsman ship. Kiara was pleased with their progress. "If they keep this up, we'll be leaving soon." She commented on their way back to the palace.
Kiara went to the girl's baths before lunch. Zorin had tried to convince her to dine in the main hall but she would have nothing of it.
"He told me I only had to eat dinner with him and that's all he gets." Kiara said, with a note of finality in her voice. Then she added, "You should really consider taking a bath too, you smell." She patted Zorin on the cheek and closed the door.
When Zorin arrived to their rooms, he noted that Kiara was having her humans some more clothes made.
"Your father isn't going to like this, Kiara." Zorin warned.
"So what. They need more than one outfit. What are they supposed to wear when the other is being cleaned?" She retorted. Zorin just shook his head in defeat as he grabbed some food from the table and sat himself down across from her.
"So, do you agree with the Light Force that humans should be free?" Zorin finally decided to ask.
"No, of course not but, that doesn't mean that they should be treated badly. Like I said before, it's not their fault they weren't born into magic as we were." Kiara explained patiently.
"So, actually, you take neither side? How interesting." Zorin said as he took a drink from his cup.
"Why is that so interesting? Why should I take one side or the other when they are both, clearly wrong." Kiara asked.
"I don't know, Kiara. I'm not asking you to choose a side. I just don't get it. Why have you chosen to stand with The Dark Alliance when, you clearly don't agree with it? That's all, I mean, you hate your father and probably wish him dead, you don't agree with the way he treats the humans and you seem to still, love your brother." Zorin explained his thoughts
"First of all, I don't wish my father was dead. I do hate the old man but he is still my father. Second, I choose to stay with the Dark Alliance because I also like the Monarchy rule and, being next in line for the top spot, is really good incentive. Does that help explain what I'm doing here?" Kiara asked. Zorin smiled. There was definitely more to her than he thought.
"Yes, Kiara, thank you."
Kiara smiled, her humans looked absolutely wonderful. The new clothes the tailor had made for them were absolutely perfect. She even spent a few hours after lunch getting the humans all cleaned up at the baths. Kiara took a special liking to the girl named Kami. Kami, Kiara had learned, was the girl who had bravely asked about her after Kiara's father had hurt her. Kiara sat Kami down and played with her hair. When she had finished, Kami ended up with her hair braided into a bun at the nape of her neck. Kiara thought she looked beautiful.
"Now." Kiara said. "We are ready to go to dinner. Kami, you and Shella will attend us." So, Kiara fixed Shella's hair to match Kami's. Kiara was having fun; she played with the girls as if they were her living dolls. Zorin cam in the room and saw what she had done with the girls. He shook his head.
"I suppose, these are the ones to attend us at dinner with your father tonight?" He asked, clearly knowing the answer.
"Yes, why?" Kiara asked.
"Nothing Kiara, nothing." Zorin just shook his head, "You really like to push his buttons, don't you?" Kiara smiled sweetly. Then, she walked over and planted a kiss on his cheek. "Now you're getting the picture." She said with a small smile.
They left for dinner. On the way to the hall, a wizard, of some rank, grabbed Kami and began walking away with her. Kiara whirled around.
"And, just what do you think your doing with MY human." Kiara stated in a rather dangerous tone. "Don't worry Miss, you'll have your slave back when I am through with her." The wizard said pointedly. Zorin opened his mouth to say something but Kiara held her hand up to stop him.
"You sir, will unhand my human, right now or you will find yourself hanging by your pants on that wall!" Kiara snapped. The wizard just laughed and turned away intending to ignore Kiara and take Kami. Next thing he knew, he was hanging by the seat of his pants high up on the far wall. Kiara put her arm around Kami then the four of them continued to dinner, Zorin shaking his head the entire way. He had to keep from laughing in order to not be glared at by Kiara. He found her quite amusing.
When they arrived in the hall, Kiara looked upon the vast table, laden with more food than the group of people seated around it could possibly eat. She frowned slightly, knowing that the food would all be thrown out to the pigs and that if any of the palace slaves were caught taking any of it, they would be put to death. Everyone stared at Kiara's girls.
Kiara smiled and said, "I've always believed that a woman's slaves are a reflection unto her self. Don't you agree madam?" She commented, looking at what seemed to Kiara, the richest witch amongst the group.
"Why yes, lady Kiara, you are absolutely correct. Why I ---" The lady went on to explain in great detail how she, had her slaves dressed. Kiara went and took her seat next to her father.
"You have just managed to cloth, every slave from here to Timbuktu, with that one statement." Lord Vandimire said, through gritted teeth. He did not look pleased. Kiara smiled. That's a start, at least. She thought to herself.
"Oh, and by the way Kiara. I would really appreciate it if you would refrain from hanging my courtiers on walls, from now on." Lord Vandimire said irritably.
"I gave him a choice and he chose wrongly. These people just must learn some manners, that's all. I bet he won't vex me again." Kiara said calmly to her father. Lord Vandimire glared at her. Kiara smiled openly and turned to her plate, ignoring her fathers, obvious anger at her open aggression towards his wishes.
"So, when do we march against your son's armies?" Sir Jason asked, trying to change the dangerous subject.
"I don't know, Kiara, how long do you think the it will take to get the troops ready?" Vandimire asked. "Give me a week and they should be in good shape to take the field." Kiara replied.
"There, you can expect them to leave in two weeks time." Vandimire told Jason.
"We will have a Strategy council in four days time. Zorin, you will set it up, make sure to let all the generals know." Jason told his son.
"Yes sir. Do we know for sure as to rather Zed has Dragons with him?" Zorin asked.
"Not yet, there have been rumors. You and Kiara may want to do some aerial training, just incase." Jason replied.
The rest of the dinner went on that way. They mostly talked about the upcoming war and training for it. Kiara had made sure, she set the place for her slaves and now it seemed that she had also, with just the right words, gotten the rest of the slaves in the country clothed, at least. She smiled. It's a start, it's a start. She thought to herself and smiled once again. Vandimire looked at her, clearly she was up to something, and he didn't think he would care for any idea she had forming in that irritatingly quick, and uncontrolled mind of hers.

Chapter 3. SECREATS REVEALD
Zed sat in his tent, waiting for the rain to stop. He had driven his men hard this last week. Now all they had to do was wait. They couldn't get any closer to the Dark Castle, not without being detected. They would just have to sit here and wait for the Dark Alliances forces to march into them. That's when Zed's small, handpicked force could sweep in and capture their prize, Zed's father.
As he looked around this space he occupied, he realized for the first time, he wasn't alone. He could feel there was some one with him, but couldn't see them. It was confusing; there was no possible way his father could have found him, but who else? He shrugged it off and returned to his papers, in which he had sketched a picture of a woman, he didn't know who she was but he had the feeling he had seen her, perhaps in his dreams.
"What if your father isn't marching with his forces?" One of his men had asked of him earlier in the day.
What if? Zed wondered now. However, he knew something was coming, something big. The scare on his chest had been aching for a whole day now.
Could it be some kind of warning? He had asked the healer, but no one seemed to have any answers for him, at least, no medical ones. Still, he could feel that something was coming, something he was sure would be a surprise large enough to throw him off his guard. But what, or who? d**n it, what is coming? He sat there pondering the answers.
*******************************************
Kiara was absently rubbing the scare on her right palm. She had received the mark when she brought her brother back from death; she knew he had a similar one on his chest. Hers was itching, slightly, had been for a day now.
"Zorin, he's close, my brother is closer than we think. I can feel him." Kiara said.
"What do you mean, feel him?" Zorin asked.
Kiara didn't answer right away; she thought a moment as to how she could explain.
"When I brought my brother back from death, the hand that I placed upon his chest received a scare. He has the same upon his chest. That scare, on my palm, it is itching, has been for a day now. That means that he is close, also, I can feel his presence, kind of like he is actually here, in the room, however, he's not --- " She answered as best she could. Kiara then closed her eyes and fell silent. Zorin tried to talk more on the subject but Kiara had gone else where in her mind and did hear him. She was looking for her brother, searching with her mind. Zorin realized what she was doing, he watched her closely. Mind searching could be a dangerous thing, only the really powerful Magic beings used it. You could get lost easily amongst all those minds. He hoped she knew what she was doing.
Zed sat, bolt upright in his bed, someone was attacking his defenses. He felt someone touch his mind and who ever it was, hit hard. Who could it be? He thought, it didn't feel like his father but whom, the presence felt close, almost failure to him. The only family I have left is my father, who else could it be? Why does it feel so failure? He thought. He had no idea his sister was even alive, he thought his father had killed her after she brought him back to life. He didn't go back to sleep, who ever it was they were stronger than he had expected anyone but his father could have been. So, he sat there, staring at the canvas tent ceiling for many hours, until the sun rose then he got up and dressed.
Kiara opened her eyes and gasped. Zorin jumped.
"Are you alright?"
"Yes, I'm ok, I think. I touched him, just for a moment. He has good defenses." She smiled. "I think he's waiting for us." Kiara continued, she was excited about finding her brother, she hadn't felt him or seen him in eight years, and she thought a moment about what he must look like now. Zorin stared at her, wondering what to do next.
"We should tell your father, immediately." He finally said to her.
"Yes, yes, we'll tell him, tomorrow. I'm tired right now and I don't really want you to leave me." Kiara put her head on Zorin's shoulder.
"Hold me." She said.
Zorin put his arm around her shoulder and she cuddles next to him. He brushed her hair from her face then, after some time, Kiara fell asleep. Zorin picked her up easily and brought her to her room then put her to bed. Then, he left the room to seek out Lord Vandimire, he had to tell him what Kiara had found.
Zorin walked though the halls of the castle, the lights from the torches, flickering from the draft, caused by a window, high up in the wall. Shadows played across his handsome face, showing the disturbed look upon it. He was on his way to tell Lord Vandimire of Kiara's discovery, he was going against her wishes and he didn't feel as though he really wanted to, he however, had no choice in the matter. If Vandimire found he'd kept something of this nature from him, Zorin would surly be dead by dawn. He was also thinking of his feeling towards this remarkable woman who had walked into his life and turned his world upside down. All his life he had been trained to hate her, now, he loved her. The magic used on him would not permit him to let her harm her father in any way, lest it turn on him and he be killed. Yet, he knew he would never be able to fulfill this task set upon him. He knew he'd die, rather than harm a single hair upon her beautiful head. He was now standing out side the door to Lord Vandimires chambers and stood, waiting, he had to hide his feelings, he couldn't afford them to know how he felt, it would mean his death, and possibly, hers too.
He opened the door to the chambers and entered. The guard stepped in front of him.
"Hold, state your purpose, his majesty is not seeing people at this moment, I will have to see you out less you have a reason for your interruption." The guard, boldly stated, holding his ground, spear raised in an attack pose.
Zorin laughed, "Look, it you don't move your ass and get Lord Vandimire out here at once, I am sure he'll enjoy torturing you for holding this message from his ears." Zorin grinned darkly at this less than powerful, magician. The guard hesitated then turned and disappeared in to the other room to fetch his master. Vandimire came out of the room and stood before Zorin.
"I know this is going to be good, you would not dare to enter here with out proper reason." Vandimire stated coolly. The guard standing behind him smiled.
"My Lord, Kiara has found Zed, he lies in wait, not far from us." Zorin said with a slight bow.
"Has she indeed? Well, it looks as though our mission has come to a crawl then, what is it that you suggest?" Vandimire asked, somewhat taken aback at this new information. He hadn't expected his son to be so bold as to come to him. Zorin shifted his weight and looked around, wishing his father was here, he should have gone to him first thing. Now, it was up to him to make the decision, one of which he knew, Vandimire would not like.
"I fear, we can not, risk taking you along on this small mission. It is too dangerous. He may be planning an attack upon you personally, I am sure he is aware that you always accompany your soldiers on these raids." Zorin said, with a sturdiness that he thought he couldn't find in himself. Vandimire was silent a moment, he turned to his guard and told him to fetch Sir. Jason. The guard left immediately.
