"Why? I actually have somewhere to be, don't you understand?" Ginny was walking alongside a tallish looking man, looking highly upset.
"Listen, I'm sorry Professor Weasley, but Minerva is sick and we need someone to cover detention tonight." The man explained, raising his eyebrows at her.
Ginny scowled at him, "You don't seem to get it, Headmaster, I have a child who's waiting for me to get home. I have a family to get to! Make someone else do it!" The two of them stopped outside of a door and Ginny stomped her foot angrily.
"I can't Professor. You are the only one available tonight. I'm sorry." He didn't look sorry at all.
Ginny growled angrily, "Yeah, I bet you are." She muttered, turning her back on him and going through the door. She flopped herself down at the desk, crossing her arms like an angry teenager. The clock struck 5, the end of the days classes. Students would be arriving for detention any moment.
Ginny pout her head down on the desk, hiding her angry, flushed face. It was so stupid. Just because she refused to become a full time teacher, the stupid headmaster kept giving her a rough time. She just wanted to go home to her son, to Xaver.
She did not want to do detention duty at the moment.
Alexis peeked in through the door. After a moment or two she walked in through the door slowly and over to Ginny, who was at her desk. "Umm..this is the class for detention...right?" She asked. Alexis down at Ginny, feeling intimidated.
Billie looked angrily at her last teacher of the day. "I hate him" she said and ran out of the classroom. "Hmmm the detention teacher won't notice if I'm late" Billie said to herself and slowly walked to the detention room and walked in a few minutes late and saw that Ginny was with them today. Billie smiled and then ran to a seat in the back of the detention room. She looked up at Alexis. "What did you do?" she asked her.
Alexis hurried and walked back to the desk before Ginny had time to say anything, figuring this was the right room for detention.
She sat down in the desk beside Billie. "I got mad at my teacher and threw a quil at her" Alexis said with a sly smile "Good thing I didn't get in trouble to bad. What about you?"
Ginny lifted her head, "Shut up." She said, scowling at the students, "No talking in detention."
Usually, she didn't enforce this rule. But she was just so angry at the headmaster, and so redirected her anger at the students. She sat back, rubbing her forehead and staring at the desk in front of her, her eyes dark and raging.
It was reasons like this that she had quit her jobs before.
Okay, that wasn't true. She'd been pregnant at the time, then.
Alexis quickly turned away from Billie and looked down at her desk. After a few moments of complete silence, Alexis quietly reached under her desk and got a small peice of paper. She quickly write the following sentence:
So what did you do?
Alexis crumbled it up and waited a few moments to pass it to Billie.
She then looked up at Ginny and asked "What time does detention end?"
"I'm not allowed to let you guys out of here until 8." Ginny muttered, hating the whole thing.
"Because your headmaster is a stupid piece of--"
She smacked her hand of the desk angrily and folded her arms.
"Got that right..." Alexis mumbled to herself, agreeing to what Ginny said. She leaned back in her desk and waited for Billie to write back. Alexis took out another peice of paper and began to draw on it.
There was a knock at the open door, and Ginny looked up, surprise evident upon her face.
"Mum? What are you doing here?"
An older women, gray streaked through her red hair came in and smiled at Ginny. Molly leaned down, kissing Ginny's forehead. Behind her trotted Ginny's little boy, his black hair shining in the light. He grinned at Billie, and nodded politely to Alexis.
"I thought you'd like some company, Gin." Molly said, nodding towards Cody, who took a seat at a desk. His feet were about three feet from the ground, and he swung them happily.
Ginny blinked a few times, "Mum, you didn't have to."
Molly smiled, "It's okay, dear. I knew you'd want to see Cody. Besides, he was getting anxious."
Cody said nothing, just kept looking at the girls in the back of the room. He tilted his head to the side, his ice blue eyes contemplating them with amusement.
Billie looked down and began to write as Ginny was distracted.
I was late to class and called the teacher a mudblood for making me write lines. Billie wrote and sent it back to Alexis.
Sky sat at a desk in the corner of the room. Nobody had seen her sneak in. Or so she hoped. The last thing she wanted was this stupid detention.
Billie looked at the corner and saw Sky. *When did you get here?* she asked.
Sky leaned forward, looking up to make sure Ginny wasn't watching. "About five minutes ago." She whispered.
Cody turned his eyes onto Sky, his grin growing wide. He liked Sky, had met her before. He still had the drawing she'd done.
It hung on his bedroom wall, actually. His mom had helped him frame it.
Ginny pulled a chair over for Molly, temporarily forgetting the students. She hadn't seen Sky sneak in, and at the moment, couldn't care less.
Within moments, she was in a deep conversation with her mother.
Cody hopped off the chair he'd been on and walked to Sky.
"Hi Miss Sky." He said, smiling a little. He didn't know if she'd remember him.
Sky smiled when Cody had approached her. She looked at him. "Well hello Mr. Cody." She replied back to him, her voice inbetween a whisper and a normal tone. "How are you today?"
"Okay." Cody said, pulling himself onto a chair near Sky and looking at her. He smiled, nodding his head in emphasis.
"I was sick a few days ago, but I'm better now." He explained, running his small hand through his black obsidian hair.
"How are you?"
Sky looked up at Ginny once more then at Cody. "I'm alright I guess." She said to him. "So you were sick huh? I'm glad to see you're feeling better."
Alexis didn't even notice the note was back on her desk until now. She picked it up and began to read it.
How many days of detention did the teacher give you?
Alexis crumbled the peice of paper and threw it back at Billie. She then looked at Cody and smiled politely then went back to drawing.
"Yes'm." Cody said, frowning with the memory, "I got sick after a nightmare." He told her, his voice dropping a little bit. He propped his head up on the desk, his feet swinging like crazy.
"Why are you in detention, Miss Sky? What did you do against the rules?"
He didn't ask what she did wrong. Going against the rules wasn't always wrong.
Sky smiled. "I skipped a class. Which was very wrong of me." She looked down at him. "Nightmares can be pretty scary.." Sky said quietly.
Cody looked down at the desk, tracing a name that had been carved into it's wood surface long ago.
There was a long pause.
"Cats..." He muttered, spitting out the word as though it tasted bad.
"Vile, horrid creatures. Need to be strung up by their whiskers." His words came out rough, raising in tone and pitch, "F_cking felines, damable bastards...they hate me, they hate my father...they hate the Fallen.They are just like the f_cking humans."
At the harsh words, Ginny and Molly both stood, their smiling faces turning into swift, angry frowns.
"Xerxes Codium!" Ginny snapped, "What are you saying?"
But Cody didn't look at them, he looked to Sky.
"I never did anything wrong to anyone."
He locked onto her eyes, his own swimming with anger.
"But so many people hate me."
He clenched his fist, then held his hand up, palm facing her.
"They want me dead because of what I am. Who I am."
Cody shook his five year old head, "And I don't even have someone to play with."
Ginny started towards him. Cody looked at Sky, leaning forward. In his clear voice he asked, "Do you know what I want Miss Sky?"
"I want a little brother or sister."
Ginny stopped in her tracks, staring at her son. Cody kept looking at Sky, his face set in a determined angry frown.
"I can't even have that."
Sky got out of her chair and gently hugged Cody. "Cody...don't focus on the hate. Focus on the people that love you. Love is more powerful than hate. Don't forget that. There are so many people that care about you." She looked at him. "If you ever want someone to play with, you can always come to me. But I don't think your mommy is ready for another baby." She smiled. "It'll be alright Cody. I promise." Sky said to Cody. She felt bad for him. His words made her eyes water but she didn't cry. It was sad to see a young boy angered like that.
Cody had all rights by which to cry. But although he did cry often, he didn't now. He simply blinked a few times, surprised by Sky's reaction.
She'd hugged him.
His mom.
His grandma.
Miss Sarah.
Without realizing it, Sky had just added herself to the very short list of respectable, loving, kind women that Cody knew. That he liked. Hugs came often from his mom and dad. From his grandma.
But knowing that someone else cared, made his little body shake.
And knowing that she couldn't promise such a thing, made him stop.
"You don't know that." He said softly. "My uncle Xences murdered my dad's baby sister in front of him...in front of my mom...he would not hesitate to kill me. He already assured my dad of that."
He wrapped his arms around her, "The Ministry is trying to run us out of the country...my parents aren't even married because they don't know what that will do. They don't know what will happen, and it's all they want.."
Cody buried his head in Sky's shoulder, "It's all any of us want. We just want to be a normal family! I want my mom to stay home with me! I want my dad to come home at a normal time! I want a little brother or sister...I want to not be afraid that every time on of my parents leaves they won't come back!"
"Cody..." Ginny spoke softly, kneeling beside Sky, reaching out and almost touching Cody's hair. Her hand fell short and she just stared a her son, "Angel..."
Cody refused to look at her, and continued speaking to Sky.
"Your parents are dead, I know that Miss Sky...so you know what I am afraid of!"
She'd never told him that. No one had. He'd just known.
He was Ginny's son, after all.
Sky looked at Ginny, no words needing to be said. She closed her eyes, thinking.
"Your parents are dead, I know that Miss Sky...so you know what I am afraid of!"
Sky didn't know what to say to him. How to comfort him. She sat there in silence. Then she looked back at Ginny. "Cody, your mother loves you very much. So does your father. I promise. Nothing will happen..." Was all Sky could say.
"You shouldn't promise things...that you have no control over." Cody said, his voice catching as he finally began to cry. He let go of Sky, covering his face and crying. His body shook with each sob, and he stood on his own. He tried to catch his breath, tried to stop his tears. It only caused him to start coughing.
He'd only just gotten over his sickness from before.
So many people kept making promises that they couldn't keep.
So many broken promises.
Ginny bit her lip as he coughed, suddenly looking up.
"Screw this! Detention is over, everybody go to your common rooms." She snapped, tears at the edge of her eyes. Molly watched the whole scene in silence.
Cody reached out with one hand, covering his mouth with the other as he coughed.
"Not...Miss Sky." He said between coughs.
Sky was surprised Cody wanted her to stay. She wiped her eyes with the back of her wrist. She shouldn't be crying. It wasn't fair to Cody. She looked at Ginny. "Should..I?" She asked. "Should I stay?" She felt awful. Cody shouldn't have to fear things like that. It was a terrible feeling. The thought of losing your mom..your dad. It was heart wrenching.
Ginny looked at her son, as he gained control of the coughing spasm and nodded once.
"Yes," She said softly, "He wants you to."
She watched Cody with wide eyes, looking much like a child herself.
She was. She'd only been 17 when she had him.
Cody refused to look at his mother. When he did look up it was at Sky.
"You know what it's like, Miss Sky." he told her, his voice slightly raspy. "If my parents are gone, I have no one." He shook his head, "My grandparents, yes. But they are too old to care for a child...not only that, they are too old to deal with the bullsh_t that so many would put them through."
"I have no one. I know my mom isn't ready for another baby...she wasn't ready for me."
Ginny frowned, "Angel, honey--"
"You see, she calls me that not because of my wings." Cody spoke to Sky, "But because she had been on the edge. Ready to kill herself. She'd been ready to end her own life because my father left her and she'd been alone..." He shook his head, and slowly, his wings materialized. Fitting through hidden slits in his t-shirt, the vanished state they had been in fell away, reveling the black wings that seemed to big for him. They spread out, then enfolded around him, wrapping him up in his own private hug.
"I don't want to be alone, Miss Sky. I want a sibling very badly."
Billie got up and looked at them then walked out the door and waited to talk to Alexis outside the detention room.
Alexis stood up slowly from her desk. She gave a soft smile to Cody as she passed him. Lexi pushed open the door and walked out, seeing Billie right there "Hey" she said.
Sky smiled at him. "I know we aren't blood Cody, but I can always be your big sister." She suggested. She sighed.
Maybe Ginny didn't expect Cody to come along...but Sky knew how much she loved him. He was her world.
"You won't ever be alone Cody." Sky said to him. "That I can promise."
"Hey whats up?" Billie said walking over to her. "On the note you asked how many days I have... My teacher gave me a week" She sighed
"A week? Ugh I have 2..." She said, frowning. Alexis leaned against the wall "But today we got a bit of time off...."
"That sucks for you... Maybe I'll do something bad and get it so that you'll haev someone to talk to" Billie said. "Which means I should get to do something fun, but the teachers wont like it" Billie said nad wondered what she could do. "I'm glad we got out ealry today"
Alexis laughed "Maybe that won't be necessary. Hopefully I can keep my mouth shut during detention so we can get out early on good behavior....it'l be hard though" she said smiling.
"You being good that makes me laguh" Billie said joking. "heheheha" she said.
Alexis smiled slyly. "Well...you being in detention doesn't suprise me at all" she smiled and laughed.
"Now thats just mean" Billie said like a little kid. She then crossed her arms and pushe out her bottom lip and started to pout.
Alexis frowned. "I was just kidding" she said.
Billie laughed. "so was I" she said. "Geeze Lexi can't you take a joke" she said joking.
"Well I guess I'm a very gullible person" She said, finally getting the joke.
Billie laughed slightly. "I guess so" she said.
Cody peered at her closely, "You are the closest to being able to understand, Miss Sky. But you don't fully."
He looked down, "I'm going to live for a very long time...and I will be alone a lot in my life." The tears streaked down his face, his wings twitched, and he shook his head. "I don't want to be, Miss Sky...but chances are, I will be."
His view of the world was too much for the five year old, and Ginny's heart literally broke.
The whole thing, it seemed to her, was her fault.
She'd relied on him too much. Taught him too much. Told him too much. He was only five. Actually, not even. He'd be five in a few weeks.
But, he was a child prodigy.
If someone handed him a wand, he'd be able to accomplish spells that most fourth year students couldn't even attempt. If someone asked him what 123.65 times 87564.78 was, he'd give the correct answer within moments. His words, his vocabulary, were that of someone at least twice his age.
He was a child only in body.
And in Ginny's mind, she saw the baby he had been. Intuitive, yes, but a baby nonetheless.
"Cody," She spoke now, not moving from her place beside Sky. "You know that things are complicated right now, baby. You know that until you were three, no one outside of my family even knew about you. And you know what your dad went through to come back to us."
"So how can you ever think you are truly alone? Before your dad came back...before the whole mess with the Ministry started, you and I were alone all the time. Do your remember, angel? Now, we have more people then ever that care about us. Now none of us are alone. What Sky promises can very well be true."
Ginny tilted her head to the side, surveying her son through tearful eyes.
"Honey, I want the same thing you want. I want to be a normal family too."
Cody finally looked at her, his anger apparent, "Then why won't you make dad choose?"
Choose between them and his kingdom.
Choose, which meant more?
"Because, I love your dad too much to force such a decision on him. And he loves us too much to choose us over his kingdom."
Cody reached out, grasping Sky's hand.
"I don't understand." He said, his small voice wavering.
Sky gently squeezed Cody's hand then looked up at Molly Weasley, giving her a small smile. She looked back at Cody. She really didn't know what to tell him. She was shocked at what he told her. He was a bright one. "Cody..you need to just trust me on this one." She said, her voice shaking a bit. She felt herself wanting to cry again. She would know the best, wouldn't she? She sighed. "Trust me Cody. Everything will be fine."

Now Molly intervened, "Cody, you don't have to understand."
She covered the space and walked over to the three of them. She placed a hand on Cody's head, her hand playing with his hair. Much like Ginny did.
"You're just a kid."
"I wish." Cody muttered, suddenly sitting on the floor. His wings unfurled enough for him to pull his knees to his chest and then wrapped around him again, cocoon like.
He didn't look at any of them now.
Ginny looked to Sky, but said nothing aloud.

Sky looked at Ginny and smiled. She nodded, knowing what she was thinking. She looked at Cody, then sighed. She didn't say anything to him.

Ginny stood, shaking her head. She looked at Molly, "Thanks for bringing him, Mum.You can go home. I don't work tomorrow, so I'll just keep him home with me."
Molly nodded and knelt down. She wrapped her arms around Cody's winged body, hugging him briefly, "Don't be too much trouble, Cody dear." She said, planting a kiss on Cody's head before smiling at Sky.
"You have a nice night, dear." She told her, before leaving the room.
"I guess I should get him home." Ginny said after a pause. She didn't move through, just sighed.
Sky smiled at Molly before she left and stood up. "If you guys ever need anything...let me know. Okay Ginny?" She looked at Cody and ruffled his hair with her hand. "What would it take to get you to smile?" She said to him.
Cody said nothing to Sky, glaring at the ground angrily. Ginny shook her head, shrugging at Sky.
"Thanks though. I'll keep that in mind." She spoke softly, her own manner upset and unnerved.
What was she going to do?
Sky looked at the door.
Should I go now? She thought to herself. Cody and Ginny probably needed to go home now anyway.
