But if you read book 5 you'll see that while clearing out the House of Black, they found a "large and heavy locket that nobody could open". I think that's a clue, but I wouldn't rule out a possibility of a new character either.

lol yeah I think they also had some other stuff lying around the house too that might hint in that direction...im not sure though because my memory's a little blurry.

Some of the objects were quite evil, but there really wasn't anything else...
Of course, having stolen the Horcrux might be the reason why Regulas wanted to escape from Voldemort. Sirius' explaination might not be true.
