Cody looked up at Xaver, watching him for a long moment. Then he asked the most asked question of all time. "Why?"
"I left.." Xaver began slowly, looking for the right words. "I left to the place where I grew up, with every intention that I'd be back very quickly. A few days, at most... But then a week passed. A week and a day. Two days.. And none of the work I had gone there for to begin with was making sense, let alone being finished.. I hated it. I wanted to go back. I wanted to see your mom.." Xaver blinked awkwardly, and looked to the side. "I remember the next few days, vaguely, but it's mostly a haze, from then.. until the day I came back. I suppose it will come back to me, over time... Though I'm not really sure I want to know, anymore... But that day, we saw each other for the first time.. I hadn't known Ginny was going to have you. You came as a complete surprise.. But the best surprise I could have ever dreamed up."
"Oh.." Cody said, climbing back up on the stool to replace his book. He looked at Xaver with big innocent eyes. "It's okay Daddy.  I was a surprise to Momma too." He paused, his smile glowing, "Momma says I saved her."
Then, suddenly, his eyes grew dark, "Momma is gonna fall."
Instantly, Xaver disappeared from Cody's room, reappearing in the kitchen just in time to catch Ginny from where she was standing on a tipping chair.
"Honestly, love-you're going to kill yourself!" He told her, laughing and holding her tightly.

Ginny had let out a small, startled yell when he grabbed her, and then looked at him with surprise. "What in heaven's name are you talking about?" She raised a hand to her chest, "Just give me a heart attack next time, ok?" She let out a long breath, then gave him a small smile.
"Are you going to let me go?"
"Nope." Xaver nuzzled into Ginny's neck, chuckling. "Cody had an insight that you might fall. I trust his instincts." He kissed her neck, lacing his fingers behind her back to hold her close.
Ginny giggled nervously, flushing pink, "As you well should." She told him, "He's psychic." She looked up at him, surprised at how at ease they were for the moment. Ginny smiled at him, and he smiled back.
"Soup is awesome. But not worth you." He told her.
"You're a flirt." Ginny retorted, smiling slyly. She lifted her arm to encircle his neck, putting her face close to his, "You shouldn't be allowed to talk sometimes."
Xaver grinned, wickedly, "But talking gets me out of trouble." He protested.
"Then you better talk fast, pretty boy." Ginny tilted her head, watching him with great interest. He smirked and playfully shook his head.
"Mmm. No, I'd rather be troublesome." His voice lowered, husky and rich with emotion. He grinned, then kissed her, pulling her even closer. His hand went to her hair, tangling in it as they both enjoyed the warm, raw energy.
The Ginny back away and smirked playfully, "You've gotten bad at kissing." She said, though it was a lie. All's fair in love.
"Care to reteach me then? I've heard old feathered dogs can learn new tricks...better." He leaned against the counter, watching her as she moved around the kitchen getting supper ready. "Give me a break woman! I've been off for a long time!"

Ginny Weasly

Eating dinner was so strange for Ginny. So surreal. It would have seemed normal to an outsider. The young, pretty mom absently instructing her son how to eat. The small boy, swinging his feet back and forth as he slurped up his soup. The handsome, strong father eating the small but respectable meal.
   Normal.
But they weren't. Normal, that is. Ginny had to keep reminding herself. Xaver had been gone three years. This was the first dinner as a family, and their home, that had ever been. This was new, not normal. New, and different. And strange.
But not scary.  What was scary was what came after dinner. After Cody's bath, at bedtime. Ginny took the three year old into the living room, to where Xaver sat on an armchair.
"Say goodnight to your father." Ginny said, setting the boy down. Cody ran over to Xaver, dragging some stuffed animal behind him. He crawled up into Xaver's lap, without even asking and threw his arms around Xaver's neck.
Cody looked at his dad for a moment, then kissed his cheek, "Goodnight, Daddy. I love you."
Three words that sprang Ginny's heart into her chest. The same three words that had made so much heart ache for her. Cody loved Xaver. Expected, of course. Xaver was his dad. But to love Xaver also meant not knowing when he'd leave next.
Xave smiled, hugging Cody back. "I love you too, Cody. Cross my heart." He made an 'X' over his chest with a smile, then ruffled the boy's hair. "You off to bed?"
"Mmmhmm." Cody gave him one last snuggle, then slipped off his lap, walking over to Ginny and clasping her hand. The two of them went to his room, and Ginny knelt by his small bed as he crawled beneath the covers.
"I love you, my little angel." She old him, kissing his forehead. She smoothed his hair as his eyes slowly began to close, then slowly crept out of the toddler's room.
Xaver was waiting at the mouth of the hall. Ginny put a finger to her lips, then led him back to the living room. She sat on the floor, in front of the couch.
"He rarely goes to sleep that easy." She told Xaver as he sat beside her, scooting till their sides touched.
"He's had a long day," Xaver reasoned, "You know how much of a...pest my brother can be."
Ginny nodded, then stood again, restless now, "You thirsty?" She asked, already heading into the kitchen. Xaver shook his head, saying something about drinking too much at dinner.
She came back, starring at him, a glass of water in her hand. Suddenly, she felt uneasy. This was the first time they had been alone since he'd returned. It was uneasy.
What do you say to the guy who you love, who got you pregnant, then went MIA for three years?
She leaned against the wall, watching him as he stood now. "Have we changed so much?" He asked her, his voice quiet and somber.
"I think it's just that...we don't know where to pick up." She sighed, "Where we left off? Can't do that, we have a child. Where we would have been if you hadn't left? Can't do that, because we don't know how things would have been." It was all so distressing.
Xaver watched her for a moment, before speaking again.
"Ginny, being with you again was a dream I didn't ever know could exist again... But with you and Cody? Our son?" He paused, his eyes jumping in the firelight, "Such an idea was, not very long ago, beyond my wildest of dreams. I wouldn't have believed until I saw him, or you again, that it was possible..."
Ginny's stomach did a few flips. She thought about Cody running to Xaver, kissing his cheek. Saying he loved him. She set her glass down, then, a determined look in her eyes as she walked to him. She grasped one of his wrists in both of her small, frail hands.
"I have on request if you are going to stay with Cody and I." She told him, her voice very soft and small. Like a child's. But firm, letting him know this was important.
Xaver looked her in the eyes, taking in the seriousness of the moment, "And that is?"
Ginny looked at his eyes, his beautiful swirling blue eyes. She wasn't just seeing those blue orbs, but his thoughts, his feelings, his soul. She felt like Xaver was an open book to her at the moment, and that's what she needed. Because this was a promise that she needed him to make. Something he would never, ever do. "You must never break his heart."
Xaver was quiet for a moment, "You mean like I broke yours?"
"Yes, like you broke mine." She closed her eyes, swallowing around a giant lump in her throat. Like he had broken hers. Like he had smashed hers.
"You're willing to take that chance? With him? With yourself?" Xaver sounded sad.
"I don't want it to happen again...but if it does, I'll be okay." She paused, "It would devastate him though."
"You can tell me to leave, you know," he said softly. "Tell me to go, and I'll let you raise Cody the superior way you have already begun, into the great man he will one day be. You can tell him whatever you think is best, and I'll not come around to say otherwise....Tell him I was the man I was born to be, supposed to be. And that I went back to that life... Leave out the part of the father I was trying to be. The lover I longed to be, again."
Ginny shook her head, closing her eyes to stop the sudden tears, "No! I don't want you to leave." She took a deep breath, collecting herself, "I just don't want my baby getting hurt."
Xaver took a breath, "I already hurt my baby. Before I even knew I had another one."
