It's an ancient Irish folklore (at least,what I've read it is) where if U go outside at dark,U will hear a scream. U don't no Y,but U go 2 the screamer,who in real life is a horrid,disgusting woman-like creature that eats humans,
and humans ONLY! :o! :o! the reason ppl say 'screaming like a banshee' is because their screams are deafening,and yet,enchanting.2 get a better description,read the 3rd HP book,in the chapter:The Boggart. ;D

Yeah, banshee's mostly only live in castles and come out at night.  They have hair down to the floor usually made of fire and skeleton like skin.  The screams are very very high pitched and loud and creepy!!  It's like a Siren on land...
