Who else finds Hermione annoying

That's not what she meant by the word tolerant. She meant that a clever person wouldn't just sit back and tolerate someone doing something wrong. She didn't mean that a clever person can't tolerate anyone not as smart as they are. Different definition of tolerance.

I get your point but I meant tolerance it in exactly the way you describe it.
Even though she thinks that it is stupid of Harry and Ron breaking the rules, that would not hinder her leaning back and let Harry and Ron do whatever they want. And I don't think that she should always be quiet and let them their will, but shes exactly the opposite - she never remains silent - she always barks around, how dangerous, "don't you dare ..." etc etc thats really annoying.

Try to imagine a character like Hermione in real life? As a boy and teenager would you want to hang around with her? You can't have fun with her.

To come back to the point - one of the great difficulties of loving someone is to accept the person as he or she is and not trying to change the other one. And thats a thing Hermiones character isn't capable of.
Everybody has the right to be stupid
and it has come to my attention that you are abusing your privileges!

But that's why she's there. J.K. put her in there as a counter-balence to Ron's airheadedness and Harry's immaturity. She's the voice of rationality and maturity. Sometimes a conscience can be annoying, but its necessary nonetheless.

Yes. Because if your idea of fun is to go galevanting around doing stupid things, then you have a lot of growing up to do. I'm 17, and I'm a guy, and I would have no problem with someone like her. I can't stand people on MTV and crap like that, simply because they have such a complete disregard for commonsense and rules, thinking only of the next high and what feels good to them at that particular moment in time and space.

But that's where you wrong. If she didn't love Harry and Ron, what else has kept her at Harry's side for 6 years and the constant threat of death? What else makes her so concerned with helping him? What else would make her willing to potentially risk her life by dedicating herself to Harry at the end of book 6 if not for love?

I fully accept that there has to be a counter balance tho Ron and Harry, and I would not mind Hermione if she calms thems down. But its the way she does it! Why does she have to act in extremes. Is really seems that she is not able to have fun.
You are arguing about the other extreme - boys or girls who are only stupid - and nothing else.
I fully accept and regret that Rowlings characters are a bit too shallow and plain for my taste, but that doesn't mean that I don't love to read these books.

About my last statement about love, I fear you have missed my point completely. I didn't want to say that Hermione does not love Harry and Ron - I only wanted to state that a part of truly loving someone is to accept the person as a whole and not trying to form and model the other. But maybe that does not count here, because at the age of Harry and Ron you have not fully developed your personality - so changing has to be done and may be sensible.

But nonetheless I find the character of Hermione in this extreme form unnatural and a bit too plain. And above all extremely annoying.

I dont see the necessity of winning or loosing a discussion, do you?
I just want to understand other points of view and how they argue - that can be really interesting. Unfortunately Neo is one of the few exceptions here and I really appreciate the discussions.

There is only one way to explain both of your points. It's pretty apparent that Hermione cares for Harry and Ron. But sometimes to fully care you have to go to extrems and try and change them. For example, if you were doing something that was really harmful to yourself, whatever that may be, your parents would, or hopefully would, step in and stop you. Even if you told them that that's just the way you are and that they should just accept it, I seriously doubt that they would say "Okay, we'll let you keep doing what your doing."

The same rules apply to Hermione. She sees that what Harry's and Ron's actions could lead down a path that's not necessarily  good for them. So she steps in and says something. It just so happens that useally they are doing something that will get them into alot of trouble or worse. Yes it's good to let people make there mistakes and all, but I think both Harry and Ron passed that line in book 2.

I think she sounds ok. It's Ron who annoys me. Dunno why, he just generally annoys me.
