thestrals pull the carriges up to the castle in the third. but harry can't see them then. the only time he can see them is in the fifth because of cedric's death. why couldn't harry see them earylier, before cedric's death? he saw his mother die when he was little! that counts as death right?!

Let's see how well I remember it!

Harry doesn't exactly remember his mother's death all that well, does he? It's possible that memory has something to do with it. It's also possible that he never really accepted his mother's death.

Now, I'm not saying this is true, but I think it's plausable.

well, harry do remember some about his parent's death, but it is what he hears when the dementors gets near. he only hear them, not see them. I guess that has someting to do whit it. 'cause if you are able to see the thestrals, you have to have SEEN someone die... if I remember right, the only thing harry can remember by sight, is a green light caused by the Avada Kadava made by Lord Voldemort....

my boyfriend and I have pondered this deeply and we've come with an answer:

When Harry was a baby and he saw his mother die, he was 1 year old. The only reason he even knows what happened is becase someone told him about it 10 years later. However, he could remember the green light and some screaming later on, but that was it. He didn't remember his mum dying at all really. When he saw Cedric die, he saw EVERY SINGLE THING. So, basically, we think it's because he doesn't remember his mom's death significantly.
