its when dementors are coming at you then you think happy thoughts and then yell *expecto patronum!!* and then you patronus (harry's is a stag) comes out of the end of your wand and the dementors run away!!

a patronous isn't used just for dementor's, im pretty sure its like ur animal guardian and something you represent. If your protonus is a dog, then your expecto patronum is a dog and your animophus is a dog and more stuff.
